Last Mac malware infection I had was off a MacAddict cover CD-ROM back in 1999. What the hell was it called again? *couple minutes trying to recall passes, as I read other posts* Oh yeah! The Autostart worm (infected only PPC systems back in the days of MacOS 8.x IIRC). Harmless little bugger, and easily removed manually. Not like malware nowadays, ha! -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Can anyone recommend a Mac magazine that's still useful? Does it have to be paper? I pull RSS feeds from MacNN, 9to5Mac.com, MacRumors. Actually, between the three, there's a lot of duplication and since 9to5 shows up first in my reader, I often read things there and then skip over basically the same info elsewhere. Oh, yeah, MacOSXHints, too. Add in Ars Technica, MacSparky (just found this one), and maybe Pogue's blog at NYT, perhaps also toss in Daring Fireball, too. I dunno why certain folks think RSS is dead. No way I'd go to all those websites every day to see what was going on. Given a decent reader it's trivial to browse through them and pick out the bits and pieces I want to read. Not that Apple ever made a decent reader. Having RSS feeds into Safari was pitiful. NetNewsWire and Reeder (waiting for the latter to come out with another update, btw) both put Apple to shame, as did Reader.Google.com. A pox on Google for killing that off, too. Happy to hear other recommendations, btw.

I just discovered Feedly: www.feedly.com It's web-based, but more flexible than RSS reading applications that I've tried. It provides numerous ways to view your feeds and loads them fast. I had been using Netnewswire for years, but I decided to look for other options this week after trying their new beta and being underwhelmed by it. In my search for a replacement for Netnewswire, I bought Readkit, which costs $6.99, and is only avaiable on the Mac App Store. Readkit can sync with Feedly. But after playing around with Readkit, and then playing around with Feedly's website, I realized that I prefer using Feedly's website over Readkit. Feedly's basic account is free, and it seems fine to me. Even their free accounts are more flexible/powerful than Netnewswire. I also used Fluid (http://fluidapp.com) to make an "app" of the Feedly website. So now I can run Feedly independent of a web browser, just as if it were a desktop application. Sky

If he ever gets around to re-releasing it for the desktop, look for Reeder. It uses Feedly's back end (or any of several others -- it was the move from Google Reader which killed off Reeder 1 and led to Reeder 2 which so far is out only on iOS). Really really slick.

At this point, I only want one that can sync. With Google Reader gone, I am using Feedly and Reeder 2 (iOS) works with that. The Reeder guy is supposedly getting ready to release a new OS X one. Until then, I'm making do with the Feedly website which, actually, really isn't bad at all.

You could always keep Vienna's App Support folder synced acoss multiple Macs via Dropbox using symbolic links. But yeah - there are better apps if you want to sync your RSS feeds from device to device, and RSS app to app cross-platform. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

The WWW.
When I bought my first iMac I got a few months of MacWorld for free. I
thought it nice and then subscribed for a year. But the useful unknown
tips per issue ratio fell to a point where it wasn't worth opening them
anymore so I didn't renew.
Between 9to5Mac, Macrumours, Macworld's own site and many more I'm more
up to date (or can find something needed) much quicker than wading
through a magazine that is mainly dedicated to selling add space.
Not to mention of course the avoidance of paper waste and the fossil
fuel emissions and energy in printing the magazine and shipping it.

I ask questions here from time to time and get good to excellent replies
from the usual suspects - or nothing.
Searching the web I find the odd bit here and there and can usually find
what I need. Upcoming news or new things I don't find here much at all
unless someone announces it (and sometimes I'm the announcer).
But this NG is not as good as it was 5 years ago and I suspect it was
ever better 5 years before that. (usenet groups everywhere have been
suffering from quality issues).
