Did you read my follow-up message?

I have a Barclay card (Actually, a Williams Sonoma affiliation card that's
hosted by Barclay), and have no problems with their web site even though I
have third-party cookies blocked. What I don't like about them is that
they don't allow Quicken to download transactions; I have to download a QFX
file from their web site and then import it into Quicken.

a lot of web sites use cookies.

however, that particular web site isn't using them properly, which
suggests they are doing other stuff wrong too, one of which is java.

The same thing occurred to me, but then I considered that web access
to the mutual fund could do more damage than to a typical checking
account.

I should have mentioned that I also have a Master Card with them.

I'm in New Zealand, and I know one person who was told they *must* have
anti-virus software on their Mac ... but whether it was an actual
requirement or simply the help desk / teller staff being
unknowledgeable about Macs is another question.

Nope. Windows can get viruses and malware EXTREMELY easily, even with
anti-virus software installed and constantly updated. Plus much of the
malware isn't even recognised by the leading anti-virus software (free
and commercial), let alone blocked from being installed.

That's an immediate and solid fail in my book. No way I would agree to
such a thing.

My real world experience says that the opposite is typically the case:
when a virus wipes out hundreds of Windows PCs in a corporate network,
Mac users are the ones they all bribe and beg to get shit done for them
- despite not running Mac antivirus software.

I woudn't be surprised if most banks have some sort of clause similar
to that in the small print of the contract people sign and agree to
without bothering to read when opening an account. :-)

Ph well, if you're going that far back, I will mention that once I had a
virus on my Mac (around system 6 pr 7), and that came from a cover disk
of a Mac magazine.

I've had several run-ins with classic Mac viruses myself. Those were fun

They would have all fit on a single floppy. There were, IIRC, 31 total.
Disinfectant was a system extension that protected from all of them.

*shrug* A few infected hypercard stacks which were not insignificant in
size. But I'm sure just the uncompiled code for every single classic Mac
virus, worm and trojan horse could have fit on one single sided 400K
floppy. Those were the days. Try fitting an OS (System 6 for example),
an app and still having room for several documents on one 1.44MB floppy
nowadays. If you can find such a floppy. Or anything to read it. I
wonder if my Imation SuperDisk (failed 120MB 'super' floppies, plus
regular 1.44MB floppy read/write) still works with modern Macs...?

I've got hundreds of them - Amiga formatted and Mac formatted. :-)

Brnad new floppy disks are hard to find, although I seem to recall
reading only relatively recently that some company had decided to stop
making them.

Well, if you want to spend the time to clean and re-align my PowerMac's
floppy drive, then I can read them.

It might do, depending on the connector and disk formatting. My
PowerMac's internal Zip drive still works with Mac OS X 10.1 and 10.2.

If it doesn't can't you just boot an older Mac up as a target device
and use the floppy drive or peripheral in that? I thought that was
*easy* with Macs?
 Oh ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Disk_Mode says "... some
..." will do that. Pity. I thought *all* of them would.

Yep, you can still buy them, but they are hard to find in the local
shops (ocassionally I still see some).

I'm not sure it's really worth the expense and time. Besides I totok
the floppy drive out when it stopped working and used that drive bay in
my PowerMac for an extra hard drive.

It depends on the Mac. Some older ones can't do "Target Mode" ... but
in some case you can still connect to them via the sharing network
options and access the drives.

Last Mac malware infection I had was off a MacAddict cover CD-ROM back
in 1999. What the hell was it called again? *couple minutes trying to
recall passes, as I read other posts* Oh yeah! The Autostart worm
(infected only PPC systems back in the days of MacOS 8.x IIRC). Harmless
little bugger, and easily removed manually. Not like malware nowadays,
ha!

Speaking of Mac magazines, does anyone else still read MacWorld?
They ought to rename it IOSWorld. I think I'll let my subscription
lapse. Can anyone recommend a Mac magazine that's still useful?

Does it have to be paper?

I pull RSS feeds from MacNN, 9to5Mac.com, MacRumors. Actually, between
the three, there's a lot of duplication and since 9to5 shows up first
in my reader, I often read things there and then skip over basically
the same info elsewhere.

Oh, yeah, MacOSXHints, too.

Add in Ars Technica, MacSparky (just found this one), and maybe Pogue's
blog at NYT, perhaps also toss in Daring Fireball, too.

I dunno why certain folks think RSS is dead. No way I'd go to all
those websites every day to see what was going on. Given a decent
reader it's trivial to browse through them and pick out the bits and
pieces I want to read.

Not that Apple ever made a decent reader. Having RSS feeds into Safari
was pitiful. NetNewsWire and Reeder (waiting for the latter to come
out with another update, btw) both put Apple to shame, as did
Reader.Google.com. A pox on Google for killing that off, too.

Happy to hear other recommendations, btw.
