#49977 — Anti Virus Software on a Mac?

FromWilliam Munny <will@bigwhiskey.gov>

SubjectAnti Virus Software on a Mac?
Message-ID<l3jbif$he$1@news.albasani.net>
I just received an unexpected pay bonus at work and I'm going to treat
myself to a nice new MacBook Pro. Just wondering though, should I
install an anti virus program?

Some people say you really ought to do that now days. Others say it's
still not necessary-- creating more problems than it solves.

You can get iAntivirus (a Symantec program) free from the App Store.
How can you go wrong by getting and using it?

You can go wrong with the issues all these AV programs seem to give
people on Macs. I know, I've tried a few and all caused odd issues
inconsistently.

And at this point in time, there is no real good reason to have one
anyway.

mainly because iantivirus is a piece of shit, aside from not being
needed.

The word Symantec is the answer to that question.

You can go wrong by installing Symantec software on your computer.

Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my
opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should
believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The
Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was The
Walrus. I could be The Walrus and I'd still have to bum rides off of
people.

Back when I still used Windows, I came to the conclusion that most

You can go wrong, if it is not necessary, by having yet another
program running, updating constantly, using up time and resources. And
who knows what increased probabilities of bugs, false positives, true
negatives, neutral equivocates will result.

I use Avast, free version, on Virtual Box for my Windows and that is a
necessary but a bit of a nuisance, always running out of date, always
taking ages to update and check, always giving MS time to complain
that the virus program may be out of date and do I want to read why it
is very important to have good virus etc programs, mostly eventually
announcing that it is now updated after I have been in to check a
website and wanting to get out of VB already. Such a pleasure to get
back into Mac proper!

In Windows using virtualization? Why not forget the AV and just keep
snapshots to revert to if anything goes wrong? Most virtualization apps
offer automatic taking and backup of snapshots each time the VM is run,
and periodically during operation, so it's not even something you have
to remember to do.

Unless you're doing silly things security-wise (do you download and run
strange files, open strange and/or unexpected attachments, visit dodgy
websites with Javascript and plugins active, fail to apply updates,
etc?), you're unlikely to have a problem without AV in Windows. And in
Virtualisation it makes even less sense to run Windows AV, given the
ease of backing up the VM environment's state, and reverting to a
previous state.

The problem with that approach is that you probably want to apply the
monthly security patches so you can't stay with the same snapshot
forever. That increases the chance you will pick up a nasty along the
way.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, which is also free. It gets
regular updates, usually once a day.

When I first started using it, it was only available for Windows 7, but
I gather that XP got included later.

As far as I recall, MSE bleats if it finds another antivirus package on
the system, but it's several years since I tried that.

Try it and see seems the best approach.

My incoming email is filtered though Sophos, but
that doesn't run on an Mac. I do think they are
a decent company, and if you must, would be a
good choice. There is some overhead (CPU & I/O)
here, but with a new computer it should not be
all that bad.

So ... anti virus sellers ..... as a source for assessing the threat of

Waste of money.
