#49503 — Top 10 paid Mac apps

FromMichelle Steiner <michelle@michelle.org>
Date2013-10-05 20:29 -0700
SubjectTop 10 paid Mac apps
Message-ID<michelle-13237C.20292805102013@news.eternal-september.org>
Through the Mac App Store:

1. OS X Mountain Lion
2. Pages
3. 1Password
4. Keynote
5. Numbers
6. FaceTime 1.0.2
7. iPhoto
8. Duplicate Detective
9. Disk Doctor
10. Live Wallpaper

I don't understand #6; I have FaceTime 2.0 installed on my computer; it was
released in July of last year. And of course, it is free with Lion or
later. So why is it so high among the paid apps?

Because that older version will run under Snow Leopard?

Not sure Mountain Lion really counts as an "app" ... it's more a
collection of "apps".

Pages, Keynote, and Numbers I can understand to some degree, matbe even
FaceTime and iPhotot (paid apps??), but the rest is pretty much
over-hyped rubbish.

From the App store's perspective, I suppose, you might say that the
*installer* is the app in question.

I'm surprised at 1Password being so high there, especially since it's
also available outside the app store.

And the last three - no idea. Weird.

Yech. Word twisting of the worst kind. ;------)

A lot of people still DL their apps outside the garden so that list has
considerable skew to it.

How many Macs are still running Snow Leopard? I would have thought that
people running Snow Leopard who want FaceTime would have bought it years
ago.

I communicate regularly with a colleague who's running an iMac that's
still on 10.6. She bought Facetime and all I had to do was click on her
email address in my Address Book on my MacBook Pro. Facetime connected
us with little or no trouble.

Snow Leopard appears to be Apple's "XP". I believe the number is about
33% of Apple users still run on SL (I am part of that group).

<http://www.ipadnews.nl/tag/lion/>; North America only, as of Sept 9, 2013,
6 PM EST.

10.8 34% (Mountain Lion)
10.7 23% (Lion)
10.6 32% (Snow Leopard)
10.5 10% (Leopard)
10.4 1.7% (Tiger)
10.9 0.2%
Unk. 0.1%

I assume that this is based on an analysis of web connections; otherwise, I
doubt that 10.9 would be listed at all.

But my question still remains: Wouldn't those people running Snow Leopard
who wanted FaceTime have got it long ago? So why is it still the
sixth-most downloaded free app on the Mac App Store?

Me too. Why do we have to be at the leading edge all the time?

For that matter, will someone explain to me, and old fogey, what is the
appeal of twitter? Why text so much with so little? For the skill
developed to text on a telephone, it has already been demonstrated that
a moderate speed of Morse code is faster. Just make an app for reading
reading Morse code. Another app could be used to clean up lousy Morse
keying to where machines can read it.

The challenge is to position it so that it looks like ASCII art. Then
you can transmit it and the NSA would have no clue it contains the
recipe to make a bombe dessert :-)

Morse code shaped as ASCII art would likely pass undetected until
someone at the NSA would spot it and decided it was worth looking into
and develop software to detect such and then decode them.

If nobody important used that technique, it would never be noticed by
the NSA. Of course, the second it is noticed, it wouldn't be hard for
NSA to decode it.

So, we should all bend over and let the Number Sucking Assholes cornhole
us with a bigger algorithm?

Now, settle down. NSA does not know or care that you exist. You are not
the 'droid they are looking for.

As for Number Sucking Assholes, I take personal offense at that. My
friend Gary Durell was no such thing. Gary gave his life in Pakistan

...until you turn up on some NSA watch list due to whatever arbitrary
