Message-ID<Z_adnX5rYM7C9c3PnZ2dnUVZ_jydnZ2d@giganews.com>
Released a couple days ago.

Upgrade: $24.99 or
no-charge if prior version bought after 2013.01.01

Just installed. You need to remove the extensions from your browsers
for previous versions (Chrome/Firefox) and install anew - Safari seems
to only need the install (no removal). Retains the prior account data.

If you bought the prior version through the App Store, there's no charge
regardless of when you bought it.

Did you update it via the App store for no charge? This is not a
maintenance release, it's a new edition.

IAC I did not buy it from the App store because I missed a sale by a few
days and became petulant and complained to Agilebits and they gave me
the discount anyway (with a coupon code) by ordering from their site.

I think agilebits are fearing the new Mavericks feature along these
lines - although it might only work within Safari.

And - to be completely anal - was your version 3 purchased before 2013?

Yes. Original purchase in 2009 from Agilebits. Subsequent update to app
store version (probably on some sort of "deal") in 2011. Continued
updates from app store since then, including to V4

I find this a bit bizarre.

Agile charge the full price (or specials) on their website; and the same
price (full or special) on the App Store - of which Apple take a 30% cut.

But when you update by agilebits you have to pay for the update (unless
like me you bought v3 from them in this calendar year); but from Apple
(the channel where they make less money) they update for free. (Their
site directs you there too).

I can only speculate that the spread is covered by offloading the
billing, payment, and verification of the original purchase to Apple.

It's not the spread but the uneven treatment of customers as determinned
by purchase channel that irks me.

Maybe they expected to release version 4 much sooner than actually
happened.

They always promised, right from the release of the App Store version,
that it would include a free upgrade to version 4. I bought the App
Store version ages ago although I already had the version from the web
site, specifically because of the promise of the free upgrade. I
reckoned also that I was willing to support them by paying them money
when I did not need to.

The odd thing with Agilebits is they set the price relatively high and
then have sales or promos all the time with prices cut down 50% or so.

IMO they'd be far better off to set a lower (than their current full)
price and just stick to it and focus on marketing the product.

True enough. I didn't purchase it for years, even after folks had been
raving about it, because it was so much money. Then I got it in a
bundle (it was the main reason I bought that bundle, in fact, but some
of the other apps turned out to be absolutely great).

Strongly agreed. For $10 or $15, they could sell the hell out of it.

Yep. I put it off for ages because of the price but there was a special
offer on at the time (Thanksgiving IIRC).

Absolutely. It's currently being advertised under "Editor's Choice" in
the App Store.

"There are no reviews for the current version of this application. See
all 34 reviews for previous versions.

Be the first to write a review"

Ooh. Don't tempt me, for it won't be pretty :-(

Apple rules. As I understand it, you are not allowed to sell something
outside the App Store (or an in-app purchase) for any less than you
sell it on the outside.

There may be an exception for special upgrades, I guess, since the App
store doesn't have any means for working discounted upgrades.

Sometimes a new version of an app is free. Sometimes, when the
developer releases a new "version" it's actually a whole new app, even
though it may have an incremented number in the name.

The question re: 1Password is whether it's a new app called "1password
4" or it's version 4 of "1Password".

(I bought 1Password previously in a bundle and then, I believe may have
done one level of upgrade at some point directly from Agile, and am
planning on but haven't yet upgraded to 4 directly with Agile)

This is the opposite: get the free upgrade if you bought 1Password 3 via
the App Store at any time; but if you get the upgrade from Agilebits
(because that's where you bought it in the first place) and it was
before 2013 - you have to pay.

The App Store does show discount prices from time to time. I almost
bought 1Password 3 there when it was at 1/2 price.

Oh I get that approach - this is why there are so many apps on the
iTunes store - a lot of them are versions of another ("Lite", "XL",
"Super-", etc...).

They label it as "1 Password 4".

The previous (1 P 3) was version 3.0...

Now it's 4.0.1

But the version that arrived from App Store on Friday says 4.0.

Same here, and according to the Mac App Store, it's still 4.0. Maybe 4.0.1
is a bug fix for the direct-buy version.

I got it from Agilebits - not the App Store - 4.0.1

I just downloaded it from Agilbits; it downloaded 4.0.1, but I immediately
got a dialog asking whether I want to upgrade to 4.0.2.

Curiously, the release notes on their web site goes up to 3.8.21, and stops
there. The user guide at the web site is still for version 3.

Oh, and the Mac App Store still has only 4.0.
