#49131 — Downloading App Store's Mountain Lion gives me 10.8.2 again?

SubjectDownloading App Store's Mountain Lion gives me 10.8.2 again?
Message-ID<FcednanKsdm5ONrPnZ2dnUVZ_rmdnZ2d@earthlink.com>
Hello again.

OK, I gave up with Mac Mini's download due to the account issue. I took
the 13.3" MacBook Pro (mid-2012) to a place with fast Internet (15/1
Mb/sec speeds), but its updated Mac OS X 10.8.5's App Store kept giving
me 10.8.2 to download. I tried again (wasted another hour and downloaded
another 4.7 GB) and still got 10.8.2 (same one from last summer). From
what I read online, I am supposed to get the latest version (10.8.5).
Why is it not doing that? All wanted is a local copy of the latest DMG
installer file! Argh!

This App Store is so annoying, and I hate it. :( Thank you in advance. :)

You're mis-informed. There's a base install--in this case 10.8.2--which
will install on a blank supported machine. The version I got from the
Apple Store was 10.8.

After the install and any software migration, the 10.8 Mac App store
will download any software updates for stuff on your hard
drive--including MacOS. It will install those patches and reboot to
10.8.5.

So take your system back to the fast internet place and redo the install.

I thought you were this high paid consultant who know Macs and stuff.
MacOS has always done a minimum boot version then applied updates.
First it was with floppies, then CD/DVD, and now over the net.

Oh. I thought App Store was supposed to give the latest OS. DOH! Bah,
Internet.

And be sure not to go through the first tab on App store click on Updates.
Then you should get the latest version. I am up to x.8.5

I tried both of these methods in App Store:

1. Search for Mountain Lion. Download.

2. Updates' tab: Download.

Both ended up with 10.8.2. :/

After you download and install 10.8.2, then do an update.

Run the combo updater.
A combo update has all previous updates rolled into on big file. Go to
someones house that has a Cable connection. PPP and DSL won't cut it.

Um, this is on a MacBook Pro with 10.8.5 already installed. I just
wanted a copy of the 10.8.5 installer file for future emergencies and
Mac machines.

Then you'll need the 10.8 installer PLUS the latest combo updater:

When I went to that URL in the Mac Store, I saw 10.8.5. If you're
seeing 10.8.2, something's wrong with your Internet.

No it isn't Free. and I am not thrilled about it. But many applications
will update so previous version of application that would work on
Mountain Lion (OSX.8.x) and lower won't work.

Have they said that?

I mean, yes, everyone is assuming it will be out in October, but I don't
think Apple has announced that, have they?

they didn't announce a specific date, but it's pretty much guaranteed
that it won't be november and certainly not december. that leaves
october.

Are you still running 10.7 or did you update to 10.8.2 when you did this?

The process I followed was:

1-download "Install Mountain Lion" from Mac Store.

2-full backup and clone of 10.7 system using SuperDuper!

3-Click on "Install Mountain Lion" and answer questions. I chose an
Upgrade install.

4-Install runs, reboots machine, and continues to run. In the end, I'm
running 10.8. There may be additional updates in the Mac Store at this
point. It knows what's needed based on Spotlight which may need to
finish to tell you want additional updates are needed. I recall waiting
until it was done.

5-Mac App Store flags additional software updates. I install them along
with updates to Xcode, etc. In the end, I'm running 10.8.5.

If this is all to much for you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar
at your Apple Store. They should be able to help you update your system,
especially if all you see in the Mac Store is 10.8.2.

This is on a 13.3" MacBook Pro with the latest Mac OS X 10.8.5. I just
wanted to download a copy of the latest Mac OS X 10.8.5 installer, but
it sounds like 10.8.2 is the latest installer file?

No, 10.8.5 is the latest installer. I downloaded it a week ago from the
App Store, and have already used it to do a fresh install of 10.8.5.

A new version of the App Store full installer is released each time
there is a minor version release of Lion or Mountain Lion. For early
Lion versions, the App Store full installer was revised a few days after
the release of the Software Update and manual download (delta and combo)
updaters. For mid to late Lion versions and all Mountain Lion versions
that I checked, the App Store full installer was revised within a day of
the updaters, probably at the same time.

You can check which version App Store has by going to the information
page for Mountain Lion.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-mountain-lion/id537386512?mt=12

(Click "View in Mac App Store" on the web page to open App Store on the
appropriate page, but the details are also on the web page.)

I see 10.8.5, in both the US and NZ App Stores.

Note that the downloaded installer has a completely unrelated version
number (as shown in Finder's Get Info dialog): the 10.8.5 installer is
version 1.3.27.

To confirm the system version it will install, you either need to go
ahead and do the install, or dig inside the installer to locate a copy
of /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist (possibly needing
Pacifist to open up the relevant installer package).

If you think you just downloaded 10.8.2 from the App Store, then either
the Akamai mirror node used from your ISP hasn't been updated since
10.8.2 (highly unlikely), or you already had a copy of the 10.8.2
installer and for some reason App Store failed to replace it with a new
version, or the new version was downloaded in an unexpected location,
e.g. if you already had another copy of the installer, and App Store
replaced that copy with the 10.8.5 installer, but left your other 10.8.2
installer alone.

I will have to look at it again later. I do know the installer copy
downloaded to the HDD's / area (not /Applications). I did see the file
change its date and time based on the download date (9/28/2013) and time
(night time PDT).
