When I create a tar file using the standard 'ol "tar -cvf" command; does it include those wild and crazy Mac files such as .DS_store? Using version 2.8.3 installed via Macports.

Why don't you create one and see? Use "tar -t" to see what's in the tar file. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

If you backup using something like this: cd source-dir tar -cvf source.tar * then tar will ignore any hidden files starting with a period. However it will still pick up hidden files in subdirectories. if instead of the above you didn't do a cd: tar -cvf source.tar source-dir then tar will pick up the hidden files (.DS_store included) in that directory. You probably want to experiment with tar's --exclude= parameter. -- Paul Sture

If you don't care much about the way icons are arranged, just remove the
extraneous files and folders:
find . \( -type f -iname '.DS_*' \) -or \( -type d -iname \
'.AppleDouble' \) -exec rm -rfv \{\} \;
I do this because the files are included in ZIP files, and I really
don't like having to explain to people using Windows that they should
ignore the .DS_Store files and .AppleDouble folders.

I have just looked on a 10.5.8 system and don't see any .AppleDouble
folders.
Where do these come from?

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for them there. -- Paul Sture
