#121420 — How to Securely Delete a Data File

FromWade Garrett <wade@cooler.net>
Date2019-01-30 19:21 -0500
SubjectHow to Securely Delete a Data File
Message-ID<q2tf2m$1th$1@news.albasani.net>
I inadvertently created a copy of confidential Pages document that
resides on an encrypted sparsebundle on my spinning Macintosh HD (Mojave
10.14.3).

How can I securely delete the copy?

I guess I could just drag it to the trash bin, empty the trash bin and
then wipe the free space on the drive- but that seems like time
consuming over-kill.

How about open the file, copy paste Lorem Ipsum into it, and save it
(or save and delete it)? Of course I don't know if the new AFS would
leave previous unedited copies around.

If your disk has FileVault enabled, as it should, you simply delete the
file.

I agree.

Can still be recovered because there is a single key for the whole
drive. (Unlike iOS with keys for each file).

It cannot be recovered by anyone who doesn't have the key.

Let the end user decide where his paranoia lies...

So either, leave it alone and the files will be written over in time.

Or, write garbage everywhere to guarantee it.

Can still be recovered because there is a single key for the whole
drive. (Unlike iOS with keys for each file).

I think it makes a difference from whom you are trying to protect the
file :) If it is the NSA or the KGB, you probably have to worry about
this level of detail. On the other hand, if it's just your wife, you
can probably just rename it and hide it in plain sight :)

The problem with encrypted images is that you probably want to leave
them mounted while using them. If you don't unmount them every time
you leave the computer for a couple of minutes, they might as well be
in the clear.

I have personal journals etc which I don't wish to survive me so I have
thought about this problem. I keep them, along with other items in an
encrypted image. Unmounting the image everytime I get up to take a
leak is impractical. On the other hand, if I don't unmount it and then
drop over on the way to the toilet, the encryption is worthless. My
solution is to have the computer sleep after an hour or so and require
a password to wake from sleep. A reboot will unmount the image and I
require a password to log in on reboot anyway.

A skilled person will be able to defeat this but I don't anticipate
that there is anyone both that skilled and that motivated at the same
time.

Yes. Both components are required. Very unlikely.

Nope.

True.

I have one encrypted image that I use to store things like tax returns,
scans of various important documents like death/birth certificates,
and other things where I want them to be available regardless of what
happens to my computers, so it lives on Dropbox and iCloud. Since th
image is encrypted, I have no hesitation in storing it outside my
computer.

Because of the sort of data it contains, it is one 440MB. Could I store
it on a USB thumb drive? Certainly, but then I'd be worried about that
becoming corrupted, or having to find it, or making sure it is safe if
the house burns down, etc.

an attacker won't know what that is.

Depends on the attacker and what access he has to the physical
environment. If the police have a search warrant and find the password
(written down for example) or recovery key then they'll get in.

It all depends on what the stuff is and how important it is to erase.

and if they don't (which they don't), they won't.

and anyone who writes down their passphrase in plain text should not
expect much security. at a minimum, make it a hint.

Not at all. While my sys password is in my head, my system HD recovery
key is written down and only superficially disguised. A determined
investigator/hacker has a good chance of connecting the dots.

Then you're stupid.

Writing down a password is simply stupid. Period. There is no rational
justification for it.

Who said I wrote down a password? It's a recovery key. Not memorable

A recovery key is a password.
