I used to do the same, but homebrew has been keeping up to date, so I
simply do

brew install slrn

I run slrn locally on whatever machine I am on, but I store all the
config files in Dropbox so wherever I am, I have the same newsrc, scores,
settings, etc.

Macports has always worked pretty well for me.

I run mine in a "screen" session on a machine sitting at home. I do that
for my IRC client as well. This way I can come in from anywhere and
connect whether it's from a Windows box or my iPad.

Mac Ports requires a 7GB install of Xcode, home brew does not.

I have it running on my headless closet Mac mini server. I just ssh into
it to use it from any device I'm using at the time. I don't see a need
to keep it running indefinitely; so no need for screen.

I did have a need to keep IRC running all the time, so that was when I
heavily used screen.

Well, ok, to be fair I still use it for my servers so that regardless of
the computer/device I am on, I get the same session. In fact, for my
mail server I have a set of aliases that allow me to keep multiple
sessions active.

alias sshm='ssh -t lewis@mail.myserver.tld screen -h 5000 -DRRSU mail'
alias sshm1='ssh -t lewis@mail.myserver.tld screen -h 5000 -DRRSU mail1'
alias sshm2='ssh -t lewis@mail.myserver.tld screen -h 5000 -DRRSU mail2'
alias sshw='ssh -t lewis@www.myserver.tld screen -h 5000 -DRRSU web'
alias sshw1='ssh -t lewis@www.myserver.tld screen -h 5000 -DRRSU web1'
alias sshw2='ssh -t lewis@www.myserver.tld screen -h 5000 -DRRSU web2'

But other than that single use of Screen I really do not use any of its
features any more.

I didn’t say I never use screen - I just don’t need it for slrn.

Thanks, gtr, but I think they are too old to work with Mojave. Neither
is available in my APP store.

I'll persevere with Thunderbird. It's far better now than it used to be.

No. Installing software is always a bad idea.

In fact, you should probably remove any software that was preinstalled
on your computer (e.g. Pages, macOS, etc.)

Now you're simply teasing, André. :-P

Apple says .....

macOS includes a technology called Gatekeeper, that's designed to ensure
that only trusted software runs on your Mac.

The safest place to get apps for your Mac is the App Store. Apple
reviews each app in the App Store before it’s accepted and signs it to
ensure that it hasn’t been tampered with or altered. If there’s ever a
problem with an app, Apple can quickly remove it from the store.

If you download and install apps from the internet or directly from a
developer, macOS continues to protect your Mac. When you install Mac
apps, plug-ins, and installer packages from outside the App Store, macOS
checks the Developer ID signature and notarization status to verify that
the software is from an identified developer and that it has not been
altered. With macOS Mojave, developers can also have their app notarized
by Apple—an indication that the app was uploaded to Apple and passed a
security check before it was distributed.

Both are actually discontinued, but they do still work ... at least as
far as macOS Mojave.

Unison 2.2 can be downloaded form the link you gave.

You can get Thoth 1.9.12 from, among other places,

That's fine, but I don't recommend downloads from CNet

After checking some of the other places that supposedly have it, CNet
seems to be the only one with an actual valid download link.

The problem with Thoth may be that it was shareware and you can no
longer register it. The final version of Unison was released as
freeware, so it fully usable.

Good advice since CNET Downloads is known to bundle adware and worse with
installers they host.

Unison 2.2 has some problems that keeps it from working properly.
Eventually giving up on it, I went back to v2.1.10.

I'm still using 1.9.1 and it works fine. Both Unison and Thoth work
just fine for me monitoring the continuously dwindling drivel in 3 or 4
dying usenet groups.
