We both appear to be using Thunderbird, so I don't understand why we're
seeing different things! :-(

He told you: You aren't viewing messages with UTF-8.

I had THOUGHT that I'd set things correctly. Your linked helped a great
deal, but I STILL see the incorrect spelling in André's header.

I even ventured into the area where "There be dragons" and changed a
couple of things but still to no avail.

Might it be best to uninstall Thunderbird and then install a new version
and start from scratch?

I doubt that would change your settings.

I haven't used Thunderbird in ages, but I suspect you need to change
Preferences > Display > Formatting > Advanced > Incoming Mail to
Unicode. You may also need to change the default encoding in Accounts >
View settings for this account > Server Settings > Default Text
Encoding. There's also the View > Text Encoding menu to consider. And
maybe there are other places I haven't thought of.

I just installed Thunderbird and all appears fine with the default
settings:

While viewing André's posts, the View > Text Encoding menu shows
Unicode.

Thank you for going to so much trouble to check. I appreciate that.

If you now click on the 'MORE' tab and read the header does the name
show as 'André'?

I'll check the settings you've described shortly.

No. It shows incorrectly there. Probably a bug in Thunderbird. It does
show correctly in the main view though.

And now you know.

Your options are:

1. Get a better news client, or
2. Deal with it.

I do! And so do you! ;-)

Seriously, I really do appreciate you taking the time and trouble to
'investigate' - it's no big deal, just something I noticed.

I've used SeaMonkey - but I found it much the same as Thunderbird.

Which OTHER newsreader do you recommend for use on my iMac?

I don't recommend one. I personally use a command-line client called
slrn; but then I'm very comfortable with command-line environments.

I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead.

OK. Thank you.

I've read here, but see no mention of Apple computers:-

http://slrn.sourceforge.net/download.html

Will you share your 'method' with me?

then you didn't read enough, not that it matters, since it's *well*
above your head.

Sure. Here's my basic method:

# curl -O https://www.jedsoft.org/releases/slang/slang-2.3.2.tar.bz2
# tar xzf slang-2.3.2.tar.bz2
# cd slang-2.3.2
# ./configure
# make
# sudo make install

# curl -O http://jedsoft.org/releases/slrn/slrn-1.0.3a.tar.bz2
# tar slrn-1.0.3a.tar.bz2
# cd slrn-1.0.3a
# ./configure
# make
# sudo make install

Create/configure ~/.slrnrc, score file, terminal properties, and so on.

I typically configure a Terminal profile to run this command to start
slrn:

clear; ssh -t my.server.hostname 'news'

Where "news" is a bash alias to:

alias news='LOGNAME=jollyroger; slrn -i ~/.slrnrc -f ~/.newsrc -h news://my.news.server --kill-log ~/.killed'

Here's what Usenet looks in slrn on my Mac Pro running macOS 10.14 at
the moment:

<https://i.imgur.com/YqiyIZM.png>

The screenshot looks a little more washed out than it appears on my
screen due to my display calibration.

RTFM on the slrn website for further installation and configuration details.

Hi JR

Once again you have gone to a lot of trouble to educate me and I
sincerely thank you for the information. I can't see clearly what
advantage that would give me over Thunderbird though. For now I'll
continue as I am.

Without your permission I have kept a copy of your post so that if I
change my mind and DO wish to try out 'slrn' I won't have to ask you
again. ;-)
