I mean after the novelty wears off. Seems like one of those appliances
that you see on late-night TV that you think will be so useful and ends
up just sitting on your counter never used. Like the Bagel Cutter or
the Apple Peeler or the Ronco Dehydrator.

On the Mac itself... ...very rarely.

On the iPhone and Apple TV. All the time.

Ah--I should have mentioned I don't use it on the Macbook, as I use
clamshell and it can't hear me very well.

I haven't thought to use it with the Apple TV. I assume there's no
"hey siri", just pushig the mic-icon button instead. What are your
common usages there?

It's far quicker to switch to a different app using Siri.

Skip the opening credits for shows: "Ahead 75 seconds"

"Watch Deadpool"
"What did s/he say"
"TV" (runs the TV home setting
"Movie Sign" (runs the movie home setting)
"Cary Grant movies"
"Turn off all the lights"

I never use it on the Mac, but I use it a lot on the phone/iPad, but
most of my use is the homepods or the Apple TV.

I have a HomePod and can invoke Siri from the office or living room - even
while it’s playing music at a loud volume.

Yeah, I should have qualified that. I meant on the Mac. I use it
myself with the iPhone when driving.

This conversation has just wised me to another, which I just tested.
"hey siri calendar event on february 13th with Dr. Franklin at
10:30am." I *despise* working with the calendar on the iphone, and in
the end find myself just putting it off until later. Or mis-scheduling
it.

Nothing "novel" about the way I use it. I get in the car, put the
iphone or ipad on the passenger seat, and siri-text my wife that I'm
leaving school, or on my way to a store.

"Hey Siri, send a text message to Nancy and say shall I pick up a bento
box on the way home or do you have dinner plans question mark." Done.
Very convenient especially in traffic and in SoCal I always am.

Using the airpods to listen to faux rain and napping in the afternoon,
I double tap my left head set and ask "what time is it", and I get the
time and a return to the rain without having to take of my eye mask,
grab my phone, check the time, turn it off, put on the eye mask again
while ensuring I don't fall back to sleep again.

I've taken to hitting the mic icon when texting someone; dictation is
vastly less tedious than two-finger hung and peck. Expanding on that,
I now use siri with more frequency to capture "Notes" information.

In the kitchen where I am invariably in a scramble, I yell, "Set a
timer for 20 minutes and label it potatoes." "Set a timer for 12
minutes and label it white wine in the freezer." And so forth.

When I am using remote.app to drive the iTunes collection on my Mac,
and playing it via airport express modules in my living room and den,
it's very handy indeed to bellow "Hey siri skip this song".

It took a long long time before I even began doing some of these
things, and even then, quite tentatively. One has to get intentionally
drive the habit before it can ever be commonplace. It's always easier
to do things the time consuming way, and you half to over come the
short-term easier. The first few I mention, are regular activities, the
last few are only occasional, but their hit-count is increasing.

Getting wise to siri is like writing scripts to do frequently repeated
tasks: Most people don't "have the time" to waste setting up a process
by which they stop "wasting time".

I should underscore the utility of this: I have actually started doing
this a lot more frequently while sitting in the office. "Set an alarm
for 2 P M, label it call Jimmy back". "Set a timer for 10 minutes
label it "you have to leave now or you'll be late".

Etc. Plenty of etc.

Same here. It’s very useful for all sorts of things.

I use it all the time to control Homekit devices and play music.

Which homekit devices?

Mainly lights (Philips Hue) and a couple of smart plugs. We also use
HomePods where Siri of course comes in not only handy, but is pretty
much required.

Your explanation also reminded me... CarPlay. Siri is pretty good there
although I'm sure I've not explored the half of it. Works great for
phone calls and Messages.

Same here. “Turn on the living room light at 50%.” Done.

A few people use it, but for most it's just a gimmick to be toyed with
as an initial novelty / "look at me" or they don't even know it exists.

I don't know about the generalized "most people", but I know a lot of
people with iPhones and none seem to make use of Siri at all. I'm not
talking about the tech-heads, but mosts of my crew is 55+, and I may be
the only one among them that uses it. I don't know about the kids.
