He also probably didn't try this: If your Mac doesn't have a keyboard to start up in safe mode or if you can't use the Shift key If your Mac doesn't have a keyboard available to start in safe mode, but you have remote access to your Mac, you can configure the Mac to start up in safe mode using the command line. Access the command line by opening Terminal remotely, or logging into the computer using SSH. Use the following Terminal command: sudo nvram boot-args="-x" If you want to start in verbose mode as well, use this instead: sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v" After using safe mode, use this Terminal command to return to a normal startup: sudo nvram boot-args="" -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. As mentioned elsewhere, the Apple support staff have been unable to identify the cause. Btw, thanks again for your guidance to get my Windows10 computer useable again after the last update. I used the procedure shown here:- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair I can't find the post where I asked for your advice! Have a good day! :-) -- David B.

I apologise if you felt that I was being 'difficult'. This is what I see this morning:- Last login: Tue Jan 15 10:49:39 on console Davids-iMac:~ david*********$ sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v" Password: nvram: Error setting variable - 'boot-args': (iokit/common) not permitted Do you have any suggestions now? Btw, I Googled and have read here:- https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/315120/setting-a-nvram-variable-in-normal-boot-not-permitted-but-allowed-in-recovery-mo?noredirect=1 I've taken no further action yet. -- David B.

Yep. That's what you get when you have a firmware password set on your Mac. You'll need to disable the firmware password to boot into Safe Mode. It is normal that you need to disable the firmware password before booting into safe mode. So you don't need to spend any more time on this. Don't forget to re-enable the firmware password when you are done with Safe Boot. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Thanks for the reminder. I've now re-enabled the firmware password. Should someone at Apple Support be contacted to hopefully spread the word about this to their staff? In all the time I've spent on the ASC during the last 10 years, I never heard any mention of this protection preventing a computer starting in Safe Boot mode. Not once! -- David B.
