I meant "Safe Mode", and I think you know that.

And you still haven't answered my question.

I doubt it.

He also probably didn't try this:

If your Mac doesn't have a keyboard to start up in safe mode or if you
can't use the Shift key If your Mac doesn't have a keyboard available to
start in safe mode, but you have remote access to your Mac, you can
configure the Mac to start up in safe mode using the command line.
Access the command line by opening Terminal remotely, or logging into
the computer using SSH. Use the following Terminal command: sudo nvram
boot-args="-x"

If you want to start in verbose mode as well, use this instead:
sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v"

After using safe mode, use this Terminal command to return to a normal
startup:
sudo nvram boot-args=""

Yes, Paul, I did but do thank you for trying to help. As mentioned
elsewhere, the Apple support staff have been unable to identify the cause.

Btw, thanks again for your guidance to get my Windows10 computer useable
again after the last update. I used the procedure shown here:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

I can't find the post where I asked for your advice!

Have a good day! :-)

If so, then what was the output you got from the nvram commands on the
page?

"Issue the following command to print out all current NVRAM contents:

     sudo nvram -xp

    "

Which presumably could be used to verify that previous
attempts to set the bootargs worked.

I'm somewhat out of my depth now, but trust you to provide helpful

So you've decided not to answer *my* question?

Do you need me to repeat it?

Does my response to Paul not suffice?

Does your response to Paul give the output you got from the nvram
commands on the Apple Safe Mode support page? Doesn't appear to be
there... Do you want people to pull your teeth just to help you?

I take your point. I had a notion that you didn't actually *want* to
help me. I apologise if you felt that I was being 'difficult'.

This is what I see this morning:-

Last login: Tue Jan 15 10:49:39 on console
Davids-iMac:~ david*********$ sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v"
Password:
nvram: Error setting variable - 'boot-args': (iokit/common) not permitted

Do you have any suggestions now?

Btw, I Googled and have read here:-

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/315120/setting-a-nvram-variable-in-normal-boot-not-permitted-but-allowed-in-recovery-mo?noredirect=1

I've taken no further action yet.

Yep. That's what you get when you have a firmware password set on your
Mac. You'll need to disable the firmware password to boot into Safe
Mode. Here's how:

*I'm impressed that you knew this* when the folk on the Apple Support
Communities forum AND Apple Support did NOT know!

Have you time to read the thread?

and .....

"Can you throw any light on my query here?" Is about my Safe Boot mode

You're welcome.

They are just human beings. All humans are fallible.

I stopped reading after your initial post, which says as of November
2018 you were running 10.14. macOS 10.14.2 is the current release. If
you are now running 10.14.2, there's no need to discuss it further.

Your Safe Boot problem is solved. It is normal that you need to disable
the firmware password before booting into safe mode. So you don't need
to spend any more time on this.

Don't forget to re-enable the firmware password when you are done with
Safe Boot.

We are indeed! I'm certainly no longer as sharp as once I was - the
only GOOD thing about getting older is that it's better than the
alternative!

I am indeed running 10.14.2 It's working well. :-)

You have no idea how pleased I am about this! :-D

I was going to ask you if you recommended that I do so.

Thanks for the reminder. I've now re-enabled the firmware password.

Should someone at Apple Support be contacted to hopefully spread the
word about this to their staff?

In all the time I've spent on the ASC during the last 10 years, I never
heard any mention of this protection preventing a computer starting in
Safe Boot mode. Not once!

"May you live as long as you want to, and want to as long as you live"!

Have a great day. I'm driving for four hours to attend a funeral this
afternoon.

I can't say that I blame you for always leaving out the part about how
it ended. I'm referring to the note in your official file, "Danger to
himself and to others".

I apologise for my typo!

There was *NO* such note on ANY file - official or otherwise. NEVER!

If you persist in telling lies, Char Jackson, you will lose ALL credibility.
