Do you have a _full_, bootable, backup to an external drive? You should.
Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper! and many other backup and imaging products
will make one.

If you have one, just attach it to your new machine and let Migration
Assistant copy over your data, apps, accounts and settings. It’s easiest to
do that as part of the initial setup of the machine. At the end of operations
you will have the OS which shipped with the new machine plus your old data,
apps, accounts and settings. You can then kill anything you don’t want from
the new machine. If you accidentally kill something you want to keep, restore
it from the backup.

Please note that you can use a Time Machine backup to do this, but that it
will take a Very Long Time to complete the operation. Time Machine works well
for getting a few items from a backup. Not so well for restoring everything
from a volume.

No longer than doing the same thing from a bootable backup or from the
current system.

Nonsense.

in my experience, 50% to 100% longer.

Nah, just what I’ve seen. Some people only have Time Machine backups. It
always takes a very long time to recover an entire volume from them.

Recovering individual files/folders is quick and easy. Recovering the whole
volume, not so quick.

Nope. No longer at all.

Restoring many GB of data DOES take a long time. Especially from spinning
rust. Double especially so from 540rpm spinning rust.

Of course not, you are talking orders of magnitude more data.

Doing a time machine restore of all of your data is faster, and SAFER,
than doing so manually, and about the same time as restoring from a
clone.

Try timing it sometime instead of relying on your incorrect impressions.

Incorrect. I've migrated data from Time Machine backups as well as from
Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper clones, and there's little or no
appreciable difference in the overall speed of the migration as far as I
can tell.
