Ah, yes. Re-looking at the page I stand corrected. Saudi Arabia and
Russia are #1 and #2, the US is #3. Thanks for the correction.

Also correct: I goofed there, too. We are #86!

You can click on the columns to get the order. I goofed and did not. Now
I have.

So we are #3 on military spending, #86 on education spending, based on
those links (which are not the same year so the data is not perfect but
gets the idea across -- we put a LOT more focus on the military compared
to education than do most counties).

Right, so by that ranking Lesotho is #2.
Because they spend 13% GDP, where the per capita income is $83/month and life
expectancy is 42 years.

Yeah, Lesotho scores 84 ranks ahead of the USA.
That why caravans of people want to live in Lesotho.

You should move there.

Seems like an odd way to select a king, but I will not pretend to know

No we didn't, doofus.

No one checks the data for Lesotho.
Only a wacko would compare Lesotho to the United States.
      Lesotho GDP- $2,721,000,000
United States GDP-$19,390,600,000,000

More realistic comparisons here:

You are the one suggesting people would make me their king merely for

High percentage of a small GDP will be a small actual spend. Low
percentage of a large GDP will be a large spend. Comparing GDP fractions
works reasonably well when GDP/person is in the same order of magnitude.
Thus, comparing US to oher G20 countries is a good first approximation.

The best comparator would be per capita spend, but even that has
problems. Averages hide details.

Easy example of how averages can mislead:

Set A (10,5,5) --> ave 6.7
Set B (16,2,2) --> ave 6.7

That's why statisticians prefer median and mode, plus standard
deviation, to characterise date sets.

Best,

Where the US ranks quite high :)

Spending is no comparator to results.
Spending in public schools is an indicator of how much is paid to teachers.
Spending on student's needs accounts for only 8% of spending.
Charter schools in the US outperform public schools routinely, yet for less
spending.

What is Snot teaching, one may wonder?

He's not a teacher but when he IS in front of a classroom, he only

Oh, my bad.
I thought I read he teaches computer classes.
My mistake.
His argument lead me even more to believe he was.

And, once more, I support teachers.
I support many fields of endeavour, least of which is statistical

Snot likes to talk about his many experiences teaching but the reality
is that even the hillbillies of Prescott, Arizona aren't dumb enough to
employ him.

I'm no longer sure what he does.
He is one of the more obviously biased, clueless people I have read.
He must just be a union minion.
He's fun to argue with, because you know he'll likely be wrong :)

Ah, I see, you think of argument as a contest.

I think of it as a method of augmenting and rearranging knowledge so
that it's more accurate.

Glad I could set you right :)
We spend too much on education.

Your augmented reality made Lesotho the number 2 country in the world
for education.

Back it up at anytime :)

Oh, by the way, just to give you more reality, so you may be able to
rearrange your "facts", my highest year of attainment in school was the
9th grade, and I went on to make quite a living.

My son graduated high school, didn't attend college, yet bought his second
house (3300 sq ft), at the age of 31. He rents the first house to some
college graduates, and lucky for them he did so, as their credit scores
are in the upper 500's.

We're always happy to help out a down-on-their-luck college graduate.
They tend to need lots of help ;)

You're whole system is rigged to the benefit of educators.
It ain't rocket science. :)

I've made a pretty good living, too. And a generally satisfying one.

Ok, one good snark deserves another:
So it's all about buying houses? that's strange, I thought it was about
living a good life.

> We're always happy to help out a down-on-their-luck college graduate.
> They tend to need lots of help ;)

Statistics disagree with you. You're an outlier. But (I apologise in
advance for the snark):

Your Grade 9 didn't include a unit on how to read statistics,
apparently. If you'd been in my Grade 9 English class, you'd have had
such a unit. Part of what we up here in the brain-freezing north call
"critical thinking".

> You're whole system is rigged to the benefit of educators.
> It ain't rocket science. :)

If that were so, educators in your country would be making as much money
as, say, plumbers, bankers, and hockey players. If you think it's rigged
for their benefit, why don't you join them? After all, "wI made quite a
living" suggest that you think it's all about the money, right? And they
get the summer off, too! Wow, what a soft touch!

BTW, even up here, where we pay teachers a decent wage, teachers'
salaries make up about 55 to 60% of the gross cost of schools. That is
over half, of course, but to me that doesn't look like it's rigged.

I'd also like to know what you mean by "8% for student needs" (as
mentioned in another post)? If you mean special education (classes,
supplies and equipment, class-room assistants and care-givers, etc)
that's pretty good. Very high, compared to other jurisdictions. If you
mean something else, what exactly?

Best,

I'm no more an outlier than any other you will never read about.

I did statistical anaylsis for a living in the automotive business for years.
I know all about mean, std dev, kurtosis, probability, you name it.

I also did statistical studies on process variables to determine their effect
on equipment settings.
It had a name, but I can't recall the procedural study name.

Yeah, I remember when teachers were all girls, except physical ed and
woodshop.

Here, it's 80% if you include benefits.

It is just stated as supplies, books, etc.

We include benefits with salaries. Sorry, I should have made that clear.
Surprised you don't. If you include pensions, that's a problem, because
it seems in the USA public pension plans have been grossly underfunded
for years, and badly managed, too.

Here, we teachers pay into our pension plan. When I retired, I was
paying 9.1% of gross into the pension plan. Now, teachers pay almost
13%. The Provincial Government in theory pays in an equal amount, in the
form of bonds. However, except for two years in the 1970s when we had
that oil crisis, the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan payouts have been
entirely funded by teacher contributions an earned investment income.
It's of the best-managed pension plans in the world, and worth many
billions of dollars.

The reason for the increasing teacher contributions to the plan is to
prevent the government from actually having to cash in the bonds to pay
pensions. Sweet deal for the taxpayer, eh?

And where is "here" exactly?

BTW, nice to know you did stats analysis. That explains your snarky
comment about Lesotho. :-)

However: while GDP fractions fail as comparators of actual spending
between countries with vastly different GDP/person, they are fairly good
guides to national priorities.

Best,

Grossly underfunded by those that will one day receive them, here.
They have been upping the percetage here, but whether it is to little, we
will see.

I pay 10.5% here for retirement, which I very little care about.
I made money early, then picked a government job for the end.
I get great benefits, though.

It's rarely a sweet deal for the taxpayer.
Government looks out for itself most of the time.

The United(formerly) States.

Yeah, I get stats. :)

You may find that the GDP number is often misleading.
As a percent of gub'met spending, Lesotho is at 7-9% for education.
How much that is allocated is not always how much that is spent.
