Nope. There is work involved in getting it all styled, but that work exists in ANY layout system.

Nope. Not in LaTeX. Although you may have to look around for the layout you like. Here's one: https://wordknowhow.wordpress.com/2013/01/30/how-to-use-multilevel-numbered-headings-in-the-word/ It's quite a bit more complex than your <laughing> Microsoft Word "book" "layout", but yields a much better finished product. -- IF I HAD A MINE SHAFT, I don't think I would just abandon it. You have to be very careful about numbering in Word when you break
your document into sections.

Review Questions
(1) If Nerd on the planet Nutley starts out in his spaceship at 20 KPH,
and his speed doubles every 3.2 seconds, how long will it be before
he exceeds the speed of light? How long will it be before the
Galactic Patrol picks up the pieces of his spaceship?
(2) If Roger Rowdy wrecks his car every week, and each week he breaks
twice as many bones as before, how long will it be before he breaks
every bone in his body? How long will it be before they cut off
his insurance? Where does he get a new car every week?
(3) If Johnson drinks one beer the first hour (slow start), four beers
the next hour, nine beers the next, etc., and stacks the cans in a
pyramid, how soon will Johnson's pyramid be larger than King
Tut's? When will it fall on him? Will he notice?

The "Book" functionality in Word is very, very fragile. I'd never use
it again.

Oy ve! A book publisher will want you to stick to a style sheet. So if you are using Word, they will give you a style sheet to adhere to to write the book. If the author sticks to it like glue there should be little trouble. However, if you are writing a technical book, something that illustrates with screens it is a lot of work. From the writer perspective I had to create my own art because as I'm writing about the screen I need to see it. From the publisher's perspective they want Fig .1 and so on, but as a writer, I'd need to see the layout at the same time to really talk to it. In some ways writing in HTML is easier. You have a figure you are writing against above you. And there are no pages. It's just a linear thing. But then someone has to create pages from it. And Yet another makes an appendix, glossary and so on. The writer may want to make references to other chapters and or pages, which requires knowledge of the layout, which might not exist at this time. Word is simply not a good medium for a writer. Now that I have more than a year of solid Vim usage I feel like I'd rather use Vim to write a book then use Word. I can just write something like file:///url.jpg of the image I writing against and describe it the way I want to. So it would be: file:///url/fig001.jpg fig .1 I have not used LaTex yet but hear good things about it. Vim is second nature to me at this point. I could easily style like macros to define what it is that I am writing. Vim scales really well. I could have huge documents, but I don't think I would. I think I'd have a chapter at a time, or maybe even a subject at a time, with URLs for images, inside a folder. That would make it fairly simple to do layout later in Quark. I've used Quark in the past to do an entire book layout complete with over 450 illustrations. Books are a bit of work. The one good part about using word is track-changes between the author and the editors. With the popularity of git though, I'm starting to wonder if git could be used. Actually, I think it can, but it would require training the editors in git's usage. But I actually think git is the best thing I've ever seen for such a job. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

Illustrator wasn't bad, just liked Freehand better. Honestly can't even remember why at this point. Now I actually like Illustrator.
