#117184 — Downgrading the OS

Fromcsampson@inetworld.net (Charles H. Sampson)
Date2018-06-09 13:24 -0700
SubjectDowngrading the OS
Message-ID<1nq2sg9.1qau9ha15fn6j3N%csampson@inetworld.net>
I have an unusual problem that requires me to have a computer running on
10.8. I bought the system disk from Apple for $20 but I'm unable to
"downgrade". When I click on the disk's Install Mac OS X (which has the
"No" symbol superimposed on it), I get the following messages:

"You can't use this version of the application 'Install Mac OS X' with
this version of macOS. You have 'Install Mac OS X' 23.1.1."

What to do? Are there some system files that I should delete?

By the way, I do have an up-to-date Time Machine backup for the computer
whose OS I want to change.

Try using its Disk Utility app and erase everything on that drive. Wipe
EVERYTHING off including its partitions. Start clean from scratch.

what problem could that be?

you can't (easily) downgrade to an older system. only same or newer.

you will need to reformat the drive and start fresh, ideally booted
from a usb stick installer that you created.

and that's assuming that the mac itself is old enough to run 10.8. if
not, you won't be able to install 10.8 no matter what you do.

what mac is it?

a much better solution is create a guest system in vmware or parallels.

Or on an external drive, if you're not in a hurry.

It's a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. That should be old enough to run 10.8.

There are good reasons for this. The 10.8 installer has scripts that
expect your systenm disk to have config files for 10.8 or older and
ability to convert config files from older formats to 10.8. It has no
knowledge of what format later versions would use and thus no login to
convert config files from newer versions down to 10.8

The Mail.App for instance has a mail database that tends to change with
every version. So your 10.9 Mail.App files may not be readable by the
10.8 Mail.App.

Your best bet is to carve out a new partition on your system disk or buy
separate disk and install 19.8 on it and boot 10.8 when you need to run
that app.

I'm curious how you got a 10.8 install disk from Apple when Apple never produced
such a thing. 10.8 was preinstalled on new hardware, or download-to-upgrade only.

LOL! I am not going to play like Sandman did not give me good advice with Cinnamon and I appreciate his knowledge. Snit Glasser has my posts to study and should start to act as if he grew a brain from this day forward... of course he blew it when it mattered ;) Plenty of posters keep responding to Snit Glasser. In truth I can't chide Sandman for his hissy fit but I can't grasp why he writes here after all this nonsense. Sandman is hoping for dialog as done in a Facebook forum and open environments are not it. Snit Glasser's actions are thoroughly false. There's no ambiguity that as soon as any former 'filtered person' does one thing to wound the poor pansy's feelings that they will be replonked.

I wish it were as simple as that. Actually, the disk I bought is 10.6,
which probably explains a lot. That's for a PowerPC Mac, isn't it?

The reason I have to ask (about the PowerPC) is that I haven't been able
to easily find technical specs at the Apple support site in some time.
When I'm looking, I usually can't find them; when I'm not looking, I
sometimes stumble across them.

no, 10.6 was intel only, 10.5 was universal and 10.4 was powerpc for
retail discs and either powerpc or intel for bundled discs.

the problem is...

No, it runs on both Intel and PowerPC architectures. Your problem is you
didn't *boot* on the DVD.

I always find them at https://support.apple.com/specs by typing in the
serial number of the particular Mac in question into the search field.
Bookmark that page and you'll always be able to find specifications.

As nospam mentioned, I'm wrong. 10.6 was Intel-only. 10.5 was dual
architecture.

MacTracker is a free app that has all sorts of useful information all in
one place. Available for iOS and mac OS.

The mid 2012 MBP you have cannot run 10.6 as it shipped with 10.7.4, for
example.

10.8 was introduced in July 2012 and requires 2007 or newer iMac or
2008 or newer pretty much everything else, 2GB of RAM and 8GB of drive
space and Mac OS 10.6.8 or later (to update).

Seconded. I have donated to the author several times as it is so useful
to me. On the Mac version I've set up a bunch of custom searches for
useful things that I keep wanting to look up (e.g. models unable to
upgrade beyond particular major OS versions).

Mid 2007 or newer iMac or MacBook Pro
Early 2008 or newer Mac Pro
Late 2008 or newer MacBook Air, MacBook (Aluminium)
Early 2009 or newer MacBook, Mac Mini, Xserve

> 2GB of RAM and 8GB of drive

(Same model and RAM requirements requirements for OS X 10.8, 10.9,
10.10, 10.11. Disk space required probably varies slightly.)

As for the OP needing to get Mountain Lion, it can be purchased from the
online store. Apple emails you a redemption code for use in App Store,
which adds Mountain Lion to your purchase history.

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377/os-x-mountain-lion

You will only be able to download Mountain Lion on a Mac able to run it
(Mid 2013 or earlier), but you can't run the installer from a later OS
version.

You can create a bootable installer using third party tools (DiskMaker X
but you will probably need an old version). Apple's command line tool
for creating a bootable installer was introduced in OS X 10.9, and I
remember the manual creation method being a little fiddly for 10.8 (it
was easier for 10.7).

Internet Recovery might give you Mountain Lion but that depends on a
detail I haven't mentioned yet: it is supposed to download the original
OS which came with your particular Mac.

For a Mid 2012 15-inch MacBook Pro, that might be 10.7 or 10.8; for the
13-inch model it might be any of 10.7 through 10.11.

Hm. I thought Apple's Internet Recovery always give you the (new/lat)est
supported version.

It gives you exactly the version that came with your Mac, IIRC. Feel
free to update to your heart's content from there.
