Recently, Safari has had issues rendering pages correctly for me. And
by that I mean only about half of the news stories (via Yahoo) appear
and if there are comments, they don't appear. If I switch to Firefox
the same page loads fast, and correctly. Most confusing. Safari 11.1
and Firefox 60.0.1. I had switched to Safari sometime ago because it
was faster but now.....

It's like a spam message. Deplorable Owl has already decided what he is going to say before he calls. What you say does not matter. What Satan says doesn't matter.

Open source is only inexpensive if your time has no value. Deplorable Owl calls it "trolling" him, even though he proceeds to provoke that precise response.

As a first diagnostic step, disable all Safari extensions to see if an
extension is causing the problem.

Another thing to try is create a new macOS user account, log into it,
and see if Safari has any trouble viewing those same websites in that
account.

Thanks. I'll do that.

I have no similar problems with Safari, but I also stay as far away from
Yahoo as I possibly can.

Out-and-out poppycock by a delusional, tall-tale telling, manipulative, co-trolling birdbrain who would not be honest even if he swore on his mother's grave.

The Mac has more streamlined workflows. Even LXQt runs better on it. And you do realize that it isn't impossible for chrisv to be doing this, or encouraging those who are.

As others have stated, check extensions etc. I have no such issues with
Safari on Yahoo, or anywhere else for that matter.

I also find FireFox to be an amazing resource hog. Right now on my Mac
Mini, it has 1 tab open and is using 64(!) threads and 294 MB of memory.
Safari 11.1 has 6 tabs open and is using 9 threads and 90 MB.

Safari is way faster loading pages here too. I would like to know why
Firefox needs 64 threads to display 1 web page.

Thanks guys. I only have two extensions in Safari, AdBlock Plus and
1Password. Disabling them had no effect but I think I've isolated it to
the address I had been using for the Yahoo home page and one
problematic website. Time will tell.
