Oddly, when I try clicking the link, in either BBEdit or TextWrangler,
it attempts to load
<http://www.filipiknow.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Steve-Jobs-and-Bil%0Dl-Gates.jpg>.
How does that URL work for you? The %0D is an escape for \r. I get a
404; Page not found.

On the other hand,
<http://www.filipiknow.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Steve-Jobs-and-Bill-Gates.jpg>
loads just fine, regardless the application.

BTW, URL shorteners were created to deal with precisely this issue.

no surprise there. the correct url does not have a %0D in it.

obviously a bogus url will get a 404.

that works.

> BTW, URL shorteners were created to deal with precisely this issue.

yep.

instead of fixing the various apps, they came out with an even worse
solution.

url shorteners are dangerous because you never know what the
destination is. it could be a useful link or it could be porn site or
even a malware infested site.

http://bit.ly is another link shortener often used by magazines,
although they use such things so that there is less chance of people
mistyping them.

There are many others, including Google's and YouTube's own.

Do note, I included a preview URL, which allows one to determine the
actual target of the shortener. Following it provides one with the
original URL which was shortened, allowing one to avoid possible
obfuscated nastiness.

Nope. They also don't have a modifier key to trigger recognition of a
URL in plain text.

BBEdit does support command-clicking a URL, and it partly recognised the
delimter but didn't handle the line break correctly.

Thoth is not unique.

MacSOUP also correctly parses a URL with delimiters and line breaks, and
it is running fine in OS X 10.10.3.

I gather from elsewhere that Thunderbird also tries to recognise
delimited URLs but it only works in some cases.

I don't care. If other newsreaders don't support established USENET
conventions, they should be fixed.

It doesn't affect me, as my client (MacSOUP) has been able to post long
URLs without inserting a line break since its most recent update, and it
can parse delimited URLs posted by others.

It isn't my posts we are talking about.

Seemed perfectly reasonable to me. I'd already posted the details, so
nospam didn't need to do the research to look them up again.

I also mentioned that using groups.google.com with a GUI web browser
also recognizes the full URL.

Where Thoth remains unique is in its ability to recognize a hard
wrapped URL, even when it's been quoted in a reply. Here it falls
well outside the recommendations found in RFC 2396, which only allows
added white space within the delimited URL.

i would have just referenced the relevant rfc, but you went into a lot
more detail so i referenced that instead and also quoted it.

Didn't work for me.

As an example, a split link such as <https://www.apple.com/osx/
      elcapitan-preview/> ...

works fine if I command-click the link in MacSOUP, but BBEdit 11.1.1 or
TextWrangler 4.5.12 tries to open:

https://www.apple.com/osx/%0D

BBEdit/TextWrangler highlights the line after the open angle bracket, to
the right edge of the window, but doesn't continue on to the next line.

If I remove the leading spaces from those two lines and repeat the test:

As an example, a split link such as <https://www.apple.com/osx/
elcapitan-preview/> ...

then BBEdit/TextWrangler tries to open:

https://www.apple.com/osx/%0Delcapitan-preview/

This time it highlighted the correct text, but didn't remove the line
break character when opening the URL.

If it is working for you, which version of BBEdit are you running?
Perhaps there is a bug in a recent version (I'm running the latest). I
can file a bug report with BareBones once I have more details.

looks like it's a new bug.

it works in text wrangler 2.3 but not in 4.5.2.

i don't know in which version the bug surfaced.

Thanks for confirming. I've sent them a bug report. In my testing,
TextWrangler 3.0 worked, but 3.5.3 and 4.0 didn't, so the bug was
introduced somewhere around TextWrangler 3.5 and the equivalent BBEdit
(circa 2010 to 2011).

Boy those old versions of TextWrangler look horrible on a retina
display. :-)

Heard back from BareBones: they confirmed the bug and say it will be

Works fine in Thoth just by clicking.

Indeed, it works on the quoted link above, too.

And even if it doesn't come through properly it's just *so* difficult
and time consuming to fix. :-\

Besides which, what self-respecting Apple user actually wants to read
anything about Bill Gates anyway (other than the obituary of his

This is something which might now be referred to as a Thothism. The
URL quoted above is broken. Thoth ignores the problem, making its

It's a point of view, innit? If it something works perfectly for me
with my software, then it isn't a problem. If it doesn't work for

Unlikely that those two mega egos would ever be able to coexist.

Wozniak and Jobs didn't last for long.
