#76468 — iCloud Drive app.

FromMichelle Steiner <michelle@michelle.org>

SubjectiCloud Drive app.
Message-ID<100620151230399154%michelle@michelle.org>
It wasn't mentioned in the keynote, so you may not have heard of it.

s-9-users-more-easily-manage-files.html>

New iCloud Drive app will let iOS 9 users more easily manage files

Users who store files in Apple¹s iCloud Drive will have an easier time
managing them when iOS 9 launches later this year.

The next update to Apple¹s mobile operating system will include an
iCloud Drive app that lets people view and manage all of the files
stored in Apple¹s cloud from a central location. Previously, iOS users
could only access those files from inside an app that accessed iCloud
Drive, which was released last year in iOS 8. OS X Yosemite, which was
released in 2014, let users manage all of their iCloud Drive files in a
special folder, similar to functionality offered by Dropbox and other
cloud storage providers.

Toby Paterson, an engineering manager at Apple, announced the app
during Apple¹s Platforms State of the Union session at WWDC, and said
it was aimed at Mac users who were accustomed to managing their files
from a central location rather than doing so inside individual apps.
Users can preview the files in their iCloud Drive from within the app,
and open them in another application for modification. The app¹s
announcement was left out of Apple¹s keynote Monday morning, where
Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi unveiled
iOS 9.

Launching a standalone app for the service pushes it closer to
competitors like Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft¹s OneDrive. It¹s
another step on Apple¹s transition away from its initial model for
saving files to iCloud, which only allowed applications to access their
own files, and kept them locked away from users. The launch of iCloud
Drive last year largely eliminated that functionality, and this new app
will let users take another step away from it by giving them access to
all their files from one location.

All of this comes at a time when tech titans are all fighting to become
the home for users¹ files in the cloud. Apple offers users 5GB of free
storage for their files, photos, and backups of their iOS devices,
while Google and Microsoft offer 15GB of free storage. Apple is also
pushing its customers towards greater iCloud use with its iCloud Photo
Library service, which syncs a user¹s entire photo library with the
cloud storage service (though those images aren¹t accessible through
iCloud Drive).

Your apostrophes look like a 1. I've noticed this a lot at work when
receiving messages from people using Macs. Why does this happen and
why can't Apple fix it?

His apostrophes look like apostrophes here, even in your quote of his
text.

Are you sure? The 1s masquerading as apostrophes are smaller than the
surrounding letters.

What text encoding are you using?
Try Unicode UTF8.

Yes, I'm sure; further, the 1's replacing apostrophe's in Alan's
message are full size.

They aren't here. So it must be a font problem.

What I am seeing in his responses is a small “1" the same size and position
as an apostrophe. However, it isn’t only present as an apostrophe.

Where you had typed, or cut and pasted “users“ or “Apple’s” in your
OP which provoked his complaint, he is seeing, and subsequently repeating,
“ users¹ “, or "Apple¹s".

In your OP you don’t have an apostrophe after “users" in the text you cut
and pasted from the PC World article, I suspect the problem lies with the
text formatting and/or layout in that article and how MT-NW deals with it.
However when it came to where an apostrophe was actually used intended with
“Apple’s” the small “1” replacing the apostrophe persists with
"Apple¹s”.

So there is something else going on here.

I see right and left slanting quotes in both cases
The apostrophe is left slanting front the top down.
This a straight up and down quote: "

In your original post they show as superscript in Thunderbird and

OK, now that we've beat this horse to death, does anyone have anything
to say about the content of the message, namely the iCloud Drive app

I didn't take it elsewhere; I'm not the one who commented on the
apostrophe looking like another character.

Could you please provide me with the Message ID of the message where
you commented on the iCloud Drive app?

They show up as ¹ for me as well.

Apparently Michelle copied and pasted that text from the web page she
mentioned. And the apostrophe character used in the text she pasted is
not a standard ASCII quote character (0x27). Something must be going
wrong in the encoding.

It isn't an Apple error or problem, contrary to your invalid
assumption. (See X-Comment-3.)

It is a long known encoding error, associated with the NewsWatcher
series of newsreaders, particularly Brian's YA-NewsWatcher and Thoth.
You're correct that a curly apostrophe appears in the PCWorld
article.

    Hex: E2 80 99
    Decimal: 226 128 153
    Unicode: 2019

When Michelle posted, it was incorrectly encoded as a superscript 1.

    Hex: C2 89
    Decimal: 194 185
    Unicode: 00B9

I'll note that the character is interpreted by Thoth and only
NewsWatcher derived newsreaders as the curly apostrophe. (Michelle,
try looking at it using a different newsreader. Thunderbird, for
example, barfs on the character.)

Thoth is claiming ISO-8859-1 encoding, but it lies. I tried a dozen or
more encodings, to pull the article body straight off a NNTP server.
In no case was the character interpreted as an apostrophe of any type.
The ISO-8859-* family invariably shows the superscript 1.

But the apostrophes look like "1" in your quote of his text.
