#76039 — Safari's Storage of Bookmarks

Fromgtr <xxx@yyy.zzz>
Date2015-06-01 16:21 -0700
SubjectSafari's Storage of Bookmarks
Message-ID<2015060116211142553-xxx@yyyzzz>
I have a few hundred bookmarks in a few score categories and managed to
delete a boatload of them.

What file can I snatch from Time Machine to get yesterday's bookmarks back?

Thanks for any aid!

So sorry--I'm using Safari 8.06 with Mac OS 10.10.3.

You forgot to mention what browser you're using.

> What file can I snatch from Time Machine to get yesterday's
> bookmarks back?

Before turning to your Time Machine backsup, your previous bookmarks
may still be hanging around, as these may get backed up by your web
browser.

Firefox:
/Users/$USER/Library/Application\ Support/Firefox/Profiles/[something_with_epoch_date]/bookmarkbackups/

Goole Chrome:

/Users/$USER/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Bookmarks
/Users/$USER/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Bookmarks.bak

You'll need to access your backups, if you're dealing with Safari.

/Users/$USER/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

Yeah, he should have mentioned the browser name in the body; but it was
in the subject, "Safari's Storage of Bookmarks". ; )

Kinda pointless, really, when it's in the Subject Line, dontcha' think?

If one's attention span doesn't last from there to the text in the body
of the post, it's probably not to be in a public forum;-)

For some reason, some people apparently have their newsreaders
configured not to show the subjects by default, they just step through
the messages sequentially. But surely there's a command to show the
header when they need to see it, and they'd use that when they run into
confusing (to them) posts like this.

Hmmmm, that would explain it-- but I'm thinking that if they do
something like that, they're probably "low-information" voters as well...

I think they do it just so they have an excuse to make
passive-aggressive responses, pointing out that the OP committed the
criminal offense of putting relevant information in the Subject line.

BZZZZT.

This would be something like a newspaper having an article that said
something in the headline that it didn't mention in the entire
article. Certainly not a criminal offense -- just poor writing style,
which clearly caused real confusion in this case.

The subject in Usenet postings is also not as conspicuous as a
headline in a newpaper because in Usenet it can be surrounded by other
information like the sender, date, newsgroups and organization
(depending on the reader).

Not quite. It is more like a newspaper having an article with no headline at
all. That leaves the reader wondering what the article might have truly been
about.

The OP provided a Subject line with appropriate unambiguous information
regarding the browser concerned. If noted, the follow up questions regarding
that particular information missing from the narrative would have been
unnecessary.

…but if the Subject line was missing for those readers, it was no fault of
the OP.

The controlling text there is “depending on the reader”.
In every Usenet client I have used there have been separate lines for
destination news groups, Subject, and sender.
The Subject has always been reasonably conspicuous for me.

I like to put my conclusions in footnotes.

Well, I know I sometimes write posts and emails starting in the subject
and continuing in the body, or with the subject alone responsible for
informing readers as to the topic at hand.

Sometimes I also duplicate the subject's information in the body. But I
generally expect - and I did not think this was an unreasonable
expectation - people to read the subject, else why did they start
reading the thread in the first place? And if they are confused as to
the topic, wouldn't the subject be the first place to look? :-)

Sounds about right to me. Some people look for any excuse they can to...
what? Feel superior? Ironically it only ever serves to underline their
insecurity.

Much like Low Information Voters. You ever look at the weekend crime reports
from Chicago?

Why would anyone want to have to click through every posting instead
of selecting just those topics that interest them?

I wonder that as well, but to each his own.

It probably works well enough for them in low-volume newsgroups. I guess
they kill-file anything that doesn't interest them, so they don't have
to click through them again in the future.
