#75850 — Apple increases its navigation nous

Coherent Navigation was acquired by Apple.

Specialize in high end GPS apps (higher accuracy by various means)
including defence, autonomous navigation and robotics.

No mention of what Apple will be doing with C.N., but with increased
emphasis on mobility, automobile integration as well as various rumours
around a possible foray into making automobiles (if directly or by
acquisition) it's not surprising that they're beefing up.

NYT: http://nyti.ms/1B62SLW

(In other news they've settled an employee poaching suit brought by A123
- a battery maker that specializes in automotive and industrial batteries).

Who was the writer who had a character name "Yakima Shorty?" All I find
on Goodgdell is a bake-shop there. I'm thinking Dashiell Hammett.

Thread started on topic. Someone complained it wasn't. I figured it was
a joke since none of the other current threads are on topic so for the
one thread that was on topic a guy complained.

Apple has probably found it more efficient to buy companies instead of
poaching employees from them and then have the resulting legal, problems.

Hiring employees from a company that does X does not mean that Apple
intends to do X. They have GIS expertise and apple needs GIS expertise.

It could also have been simply to prevent some other mapping outfit from
getting their hands on that company and its employees.

Additional tidbit:

Nokia is merging with Alcatel. And it has apparently put its "Here" maps
unit up for sale (Uber taxi is apparently interested, but also some
german car manufacturers).

Nokia's map system is apparently second after Google.

So Apple may have to ramp up its map product.

This is especially true if rumour of the iCar are true and any self
driving iCar will need to have reliable precise mapping tech which
Apple's nascent mapping product is far from having.

I don't think Apple will want to restrict sales of its iCar to only
areas where its map product is accurate.

Note that Google Street Vew data is used for self driving cars as that
product also scans for road signs (although often blurred in the
consumer product, not for the software that builds the true mapping used
by the Google car.

Without street view, I am not sure Apple can get self driving cars
working reliably.

So we'll see what else Apple does to improve its mapping. Google is
years ahead of Apple (sinply because they started years before), so it
is a challenge for Apple to catch up.

Yes.

Second in what sense ?

Nope, Here is irrelevant to Apple.

Or just use one of the available ones.

Bullshit.

You don’t know that there will ever be any iCar.

No they are not.

You don’t know that either.

More fool you. The system can obviously read the signs itself.

Number plate recognition has been around and very reliable
for a long time now. Road signs are much easier to do.

> So we'll see what else Apple does to improve its mapping.

You don’t know that it is doing anything yet.

> Google is years ahead of Apple

Yes. In spades with using amendments people provide.

No, because they are much better at it.

You don’t know that Apple needs to do that.

I'm not sure I understand how you think GPS navigation technology
(mapping) is somehow off topic for iPhones and Macs. At the very least
it's somewhat on topic, and at most very relevant to both platforms in
different ways. Same goes for the A123 poaching suit news, which relates
to Apple's battery technologies. Personally, I don't mind seeing blips
of such news items here in these groups (minus silly speculations of
doom and gloom from resident Apple haters).

Apple Maps is just as good (or not good) for routing as Google Maps and

Not really. Just try to get it to plot directions between two locations
you select on the map, neither of which are your current location.
Google Maps can do that easily.

It astounds me that such a basic functionality of a mapping software
could be missing.

It astounds me that anyone would have a problem with that. I was doing
