That is obvious. For that matter, you are not even a Mac novice; you
are a pre-novice.

You most certainly do not know more than he does.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "PREFERENCES METHOD"!!!!

Can one actually have negative knowledge? If so, I submit 'Adam' may be
such a person.

A person can know things but not believe he does (as against the view
that someone can only know p if he at least believes p).

This situation has a "having" and the negative is in *not* believing.
Or put it another way, there is a bit of negative in it and there is
knowledge.

There could be a belief that a whole lot of statements were true but
knowledge that in fact they were not.

Whether this counts as "negative knowledge", I'm not sure. But it
*could* count if you looked at it in a certain way: for example, if
you squinted with the mind's eye in a sort of double-flip, left-pike
twisting upside-down sort of a way.

Maybe David Ritz has a terminal solution for this?

It doesn't require a CLI, but this comes close, on short notice, while
on the subject of ASCII text:

Mr. Ascii does the Macarena

That *is* an obvious example of negative knowledge. I knew you could
do it, but did not know quite how.

Does that mean that if we interact with him, we come away with less

He's mellowed. I looked at some of the stuff in that tv newsgroup, and,
well, duh. We all get old and move on. David Ritz is trying to be civil,
so why can't we all?

That's true. John Hinckley has mellowed. Hell, even Charles Manson
has chilled a lot. Why do people have to remember the "murder" part
of serial killing instead of the "cereal" part? Everybody LOVES cereal!

Wrong. The TextEdit Preferences > Format setting simply lets you specify
which format (plain or rich text) is used for new documents. The Format
menu command is available regardless of which you specify in
preferences. Therefore, a user can switch between plain and rich text at
will any time with any document simply by choosing the Format menu
command.

I am having the most intense feeling of deja vu ;-) Not to mention of
futility...

It's not my Macintosh so I'll use the default ASCII text editor.

delete it when you're done with it.

or tell the owner about it.

seriously, textwrangler is *extremely* good and free.

He doesn't want rational nor simple solutions. He wants to beat his head
against reality.

I will suggest the Mac user employ the "two-menu" method, which is:

1. To save to ASCII text:
Format > Make Plain Text, File > Save

2. To save as other formats (but not ASCII text):
   File > Save > File Format > {a variety of formats}

So where is the TextEdit option to simply save as ASCII text?

You've already been told, and are refusing to acknowledge it.
