That's going to get you a series of anecdotal horror stories about every
major manufacturer. Lewis will probably never have another [insert
brand] in his consciousness.

I have a Seagate 500 Goflex works well.

Take your pick of any brand name. They're all pretty much commodities
these days; good quality, long MTBFs.

Not sure if your Mac has USB 3.0. If not, get an older model 2.0 USB
drive and save a few bucks as many online vendors have them at clear out
prices. Dropping prices of SSDs is driving prices down on all spinning
disk HDs anyway.

You can get a 1T for $60, a 2T for not much more at NewEgg. I shop there
all trhe time-- good prices, no tax collected, usually free shipping.
Even better deals if you subscribe to their daily ad email...and no, I
have no financial interest in them, just a satisfied customer.

I have a small LaCie 250gig, mainly for iPhotos and iTunes backup. USB
works well with Time Machine.

I'd recommend what I use right now: A standard 2.5" internal SATA drive
and a USB-SATA adapter off eBay. If/when you outgrow the disk, or if it
fails, you don't need to look around for a special USB one.

You can get an empty USB case from many electronics stores and then put
in whatever bare drive you like (hard drive or SSD). Empty cases come
in both "desktop" and "portable" sizes.

The only problem with that is the USB connector will be stuck at
whatever it was when you bought it, whereas when you buy a new external
drive you can get the fastest connection your computer can use at that
time. If you buy a case or USB-SATA adapter now, it's likely to be USB3
(or USB2), but in a few years computers may have faster USB4 or USB5.
Or it may even become obsolete - you might get a USB3 case / adapter
now, but your next iMac might now longer have USB at all (although
there will no doubt be another adapter to let you plug in old USB
devices into whatever port that future iMac does have).

Speed is all very well for certain things, but Time Machine backups (per
OPs request) is just not one of them. The initial full backup may take a
while (let it run overnight), but after that, transfer speed almost
doesn't matter.

Arguably, if you have an older, slower Mac, then a slower bus will keep
the backups from interfering with whatever else you're doing.

Most 2.5" drives run off USB just fine. Many USB-SATA adapters have two
USB plugs, which allows them to provide twice the power available via a
single plug.

If I were looking for cheap, I'd just buy whatever is on sale. There's not
a lot of difference in reliability or performance between brands of portable USB
hard drives these days if cheap is the feature you are looking for.

maybe help some other
I still need to buy one

here're the recommendations so far (attributions in this thread)

just buy whatever is on sale

A standard 2.5" internal SATA drive and a USB-SATA adapter off eBay

empty USB case from many electronics stores and then put in whatever
bare drive you like (hard drive or SSD)
caveat emptor: future mac might not connect (progrress you know)

I have a Western Digital that works fine

a small LaCie 250gig

OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro FW+USB (lots of T&TLAs)

Take your pick of any brand name. They're all pretty much commodities
these days; good quality, long MTBFs.
if no USB3 get older model 2.0 USB drive and save a few bucks

a Seagate 500 Goflex works well
