They will work on separate emulator software like SheepShaver ...
assuming you can get SheepShaver to run the appropriate version of OS X
the application needs.

They won't run directly in newer Mac OS X versions because Apple
removed the Rosetta translation software. (Some people claim to have
got it working by copying system files from older versions of Mac OS X
into a Rosetta-less version.)

What you can do is run a copy of Leopard Server or Snow Leopard Server
in virtualisation software (VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop or
VirtualBox) on a later version of Mac OS X. Rosetta and therefore most
Mac OS X PowerPC apps work in the virtualised OS.

The non-server versions of Leopard and Snow Leopard are not supported by
VM software (due to licensing issues) but can be made to work in some
cases through various hacks. Since Apple reduced the price of Snow
Leopard Server to the same as the non-server version, there isn't much
point hacking around the restrictions to get the non-server version
working.

SheepShaver emulates a Mac running System 7.5.2 through 9.0.4 but
doesn't work properly with Mac OS 9.1 or later, and a Mac OS X guest is
not supported at all. Therefore Mac OS X PowerPC applications won't work
in SheepShaver, unless they happen to be old enough to also run in Mac
OS 9.0.4.

Cite? I didn't spot any such claim from various Google searches, just
some early attempts with little progress.

Rosetta is more than just a few files: getting it working in Lion or
later would require a recompiled kernel with PowerPC code enabled, plus
a large number of system libraries and frameworks with PowerPC code,
because PowerPC applications running under Rosetta require PowerPC
versions of all code called within their process.

Simply copying the libraries and frameworks from an older system would
almost certainly result in a broken system, because of mutual
incompatibilities between the older libraries/frameworks and other parts
of the system which have changed.

A more complex merge of just the PowerPC code from an earlier system,
leaving the Intel code alone, might result in the Intel parts of the
system still working, but the copied PowerPC code would still have
incompatibilities. (Any such merging of code would break code signing in
recent OS X versions, also resulting in a broken system.)

Doing this without breaking the system would require the source code to
all the libraries and frameworks, so updated PowerPC versions can be
built from source. Most of them are closed source, and Apple isn't going
to provide access to the source code.

There is an issue for subscribers of snow leopard
Search for "Folder Action Dispatcher"

seems to only be a problem for snow leopard subscribers that have
folder actions defined

can't get more info from aapple since their bugbase is secretive

My opinions only.

To go from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5 shouldn't be a problem, but...

... to go to 10.10.3, you're probably going to want an SSD (rather than
a platter-based hard drive).
Yosemite will "run" fine from an SSD.
But it will seem more like "walking" booting and operating from a
platter-based drive.

If I'm not mistaken, you must also be aware that once you "move beyond"
10.6.8, you lose Rosetta so you'll no longer be able to run apps that
are still in PPC code. This may or may not be a hurdle for you.

Nothing about taht is true. Yosemite runs jsut as well from an spinning
drive. Yes, it runs better from an SSD. So will 10.8. And 10.5. And 10.0
Public Beta. And Windows 3.11. And ProDOS. and System V.

That said, there is no reason to install 10.7-10.9 at this point on any
machine that can run 10.10.

I suggest you trying running it from a 4200rpm drive in a firewire400
enclosure... ;) (I did)

There have been numerous reports (at places like forums.macrumors.com
and macintouch.com) about the sluggishness of Yosemite on a
platter-based drive. Even Ric Ford, who runs macintouch, complained
about it and remarked how much of an improvement he experienced simply
by changing from a platter based drive to an SSD.

Actually, I'm typing this right now while running Yosemite from an
external Seagate drive (may be 7200rpm, don't know) over a firewire800
connection on a late-2012 Mac Mini. Runs pretty good, but doesn't match
the performance of my "regular" OS which is 10.8.5 (booting and running
from an SSD in a USB3/SATA dock).

There is "plenty of reason" to keep using an older version of the OS if
you like it or need it. I still use 10.6.8 on a 2010 MacBook Pro. That,
too, has an SSD in it, and the OS boots up in FIVE seconds from the
first appearance of the apple to the finder. Good enough for me.

And as I said, I prefer 10.8.5 as my "main OS" on my main Mac, at least
for now.
I will continue to experiment with Yosemite as an "alternative", for now.

<snip>

Apple and oranges. Of course any OS on a SSD will be faster at booting
and running than any OS on a hard drive - that's the basically the main
point of using an SSD. Try comparing 10.8.5 installed on a hard drive
(and via a Firewire 800 connection) to get a remotely sensible
comparison.

A newer software is also often slower than an older version, simply
because they add more features, drivers, etc. that have to be loaded.
That's partly why Apple and other software companies limit the hardware
requirements to newish computers - often the software would run fine on
an old model, but is considered to be too slow (for example, you can
hack Mac OS X 10.3 to run on a beige PowerMac G3, but Apple considered
it not good enough of an experience, so the minimum system requirement
is a G4).

Yes. Of course. SSDs are much faster than even the fastest spinning
drives. My 2009 Mac Book Pro is humming along quite well with an SSDs.
SSDs make everything better.

Of course not.

But the idea that Yosemite *requires* an SSD is absurd.
