#72639 — Open anyway doesn't work

10.10.2

I'm trying to install StudioTax. "StudioTaxForMac 2014.mpkg can't be
opened because it is from an unidentified developer." No problem, go to
System Preferences -> Security -> click Open Anyway. Authenticate with
admin username and password. App installer still doesn't open; the same
"can't be opened" message appears

I changed the Gatekeeper settings to Anywhere to get the thing
installed, but why wouldn't Open Anyway work after authenticating?

Buggy software? Have you tried right/control clicking on the package
and then selecting open?

The uninstaller script for VirtualBox is the same. Still no open after
authenticating.

Curious. Is this in a standard or administrative account?

Non-admin. But I suspect you are on to something - I might need to be
logged in to an admin account to use the Open Anyway button.

Apple is making it harder and harder to use a non-admin account for
everyday use. A couple of months ago I had to force a power down, and
after every restart for months afterwards, I got the "You shut down your
computer because of a problem" message, after normal restarts. I finally
figured out to log in to an admin account first after restarting, to
banish that message for good.

For the first time in years I am seriously considering running again all
the time as an admin user. Apple seems to be pushing us in that
direction, and the last time it advised us to use a standard account for
eveeyday use was 10.6.

Nope.

You should login to an admin account after a crash or unexpected
shutdown, yes.

I've always used a standard account. Well, mostly always.

Seems like it should work either way.

I wouldn't recommend it, for all of the obvious reasons I won't bother
repeating.

No need. With a non admin account you may need to enter admin
credentials from time to time or to set "anywhere" to install a
non-identifed developer. No big deal. Sudo for other things.

It's just best practice to use your computer from a non-admin account
regardless of occasional inconveniences.

Just like Hilary Clinton!
