Well, my new MBP 13" has arrived and I'e had a few hours of use on the new
force touch trackpad. It is taking me a little bit to get use to clicking
instead of just tap-to-click as I've used for years, but it's coming along.

It is interesting how much more force it takes to actaully clikc the trackpad
on my old 2009 MBP.

Haven't linked my signatures and stuff yet, still migrating stuff over
(manually).

Wait. Is tap-to-click no longer an option?

That's a matter of opinion. I'm glad it's still an option, personally.

have you used it? it's very cool.

a deep press to preview a link is great and third party apps are
starting to support it.

Not yet. Don't get me wrong. I agree it's very cool; but I still want to
have the option to tap to click without having to exert any more force
than I do right now. I *love* being able to click and drag things
without pushing down on the track pad.

I can certainly imagine it being useful.

The needed force to click is adjustable. On the lightest setting it is barely
more than a tap. MUCH less force than it takes to phsyically move the trackpad
on my 2009 MBP.

But still more than just a tap, right?

Really depends on how hard you tap. I can certainly do something I would call a
tap that triggers the click, especially since I can tap anywhere.

A light tap, just as you can do with tap-to-click, obviously. I guess
I'll have to just try it myself sometimes since you can't seem to
give me a straight answer. ; )

I don't have anything handy that will measure the needed force. All I can say
is that on the lightest setting it is very slightly more pressure to register a
click than I need to exert on my 2009 trackpad to register a tap, and that
perception of slightly more may be entirely because of the feeling of the
click. If I simply touch the trackpad, there is no click; if I put even the
slightest force, I get a click. It is less force than it takes to activate a
keyboard key.

I'm getting used to it, but I think it's going to mess up my Magic Trackpad use
on my iMac, so hopefully a force touch stand-alone version is coming soon.

The trackpad has three settings, and defaults to the middle one which is a
definite push, but still less than the 2009 Mac Book Pro. The "Firm" setting
feels like it is pretty close to the 2009 MBP click, but (and this may be
entirely confirmation bias) I think it is still less pressure.

In all cases, the click feels like a click and the force touch feels like a
'deeper' click. I haven't used it in iMovie yet to feel the 'accelerator'
effect.

Yes, link preview and data detectors in Safari are just brilliant. It's still a
bit of a discovery process to see where Force touch does something (For
example, nothing when force touching an icon in the main System Preferences
window. If you press harder somewhere that force touch is not active, you don't
get the feedback.

So far, the only thing I don't like about the new machine is the Magsafe2
connector and having to haul an adaptor around.

The SSD is very speedy.

VERY Speedy. No, it's speedier than that.

It is, but I am trying it with the lightest click and the force click. I
suspect that having tap-to-clikc and force click will just be weird.
