SubjectRepetitive Screen Sleep
Message-ID<2015032018020055812-xxx@yyyzzz>
This one has me thinking I need to replace my late-2009 iMac post haste:

The screen sleeps. And I can move my mouse or hit the esc key as much
as I like; it's not coming back. I have the screen-saver hot corners
set so that the upper left corner will sleep the screen. If I move my
mouse up there (blind), and then move it back out, it wakes up. Less
than two seconds later it blacks out again, I wake it up, it gives me a
second or second and a half and blacks out again.

I rebooted the computer, checked the disc, found errors and fixed them.
That was two weeks ago. It went through this same shtick last week
for a while, I rebooted and it left me alone again. Today it was very
aggressive, a reboot did nothing. I did a reboot with 5 pram reset
bells and cleared the SMC (sp?) by unplugging the computer. Still did
this endless repetition of sleep.

I rebooted again with all USB/Firewire lines detached, also did 7 pram
resets (bells). This time it was peaceful. I went to system settings
and reset my hot-corner to the bottom right. On one occasion, last
week, I turned the hot-corner sleep setting off altogether, and had no
way to get it to wake up at all. It does recognize the hot-corner
removal to wake up again.

I've never had anything remotely like this happen until this week, but
had noted in recent months that after waking up and moving to another
space that it would sleep the screen, but a regular mouse-shake or esc
key would wake it up.

Any guiess on what is happening here?

What happens when you set the energy controls to no sleep, and screen
saver to never too but sleep the thing by manual control and key press
to wake it, without setting any corners or fancy shmancy?

That alone made no difference, so I set it back to 30 minutes for disc
and screen.

> ...but sleep the thing by manual control and key press to wake it

Currently the "sleep now" hotkey I have set up (Quickeys), will do just
that. Wiggling the mouse or esc works to wake it.

> ...without setting any corners or fancy shmancy?

I can try that, but do you mean setting all corners to do nothing at
all, before trying any of this? I did set the corners to do nothing,
but wound up having to hold the on/off switch to reboot. I like to
avoid that.

In any case it's not tormenting me right now so doing the experiment
wouldn't actually tell me anything.

My bluetooth mouse does not wake mine from sleep, just any key press.

Yes, basically not have active corners at all. Like it came out of the
box in the screensaver sys prefs.

Perhaps then it has nothing to do with it. But generally, I would
disable Quickeys, and go to default settings when you got the iMac in
the first place. If you cannot recall, create another account and test
to see if it sleeps and wakes ok on its basic settings or on very
simple setting... I know, a bit boring to do and then you need to find
the difference between the new account and the usual, but it's a start.

Checked your hd with Disk Utility?

The difficulty is that this "2 seconds then sleep" cycle strikes only
on occasion.

Something I should mention as I noted it at the end of the process last
time. When it "sleeps" it isn't really sleeping. I was typing in a
password when it when to sleep, I continued typing another few
characters, and hit the return key--all in the dark--and when I
re-awoke it, it has all been accepted.

> Checked your hd with Disk Utility?

I did after the first episode, found disk errors (very unusual for me),
rebooted in safe mode, fixed them. Then checked them later and all was
fixed.

After this episode I did another check--no issues.

Make it happen again, and then take a look at the console and system logs,
noting any messages that appear at the time of the incident. Post those
messages here for further diagnosis.

Viewing Crash, Console, and System Logs

To view logs on your computer, open /Applications/Utilities/Console.

The system log will usually give you an indication as to what is causing
startup and low-level issues, where the console log typically shows
issues you experience after you are logged into your user account.

Feel free to post *relevant portions* (only entries that are time
stamped around the time of the occurrence) of the logs here if you need
help understanding them. We'll be glad to take a look and tell you what
we see.

NOTE: You cannot use the Console application to view the system log from
a non-administrative account. Instead, do this:

1. Download this "Open As Administrator" service:

<http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/software/services/Open%20As%20Administrator.zip>

This is a simple service written in Automator and AppleScript. All the
script does is open the chosen application with administrator privileges
by prompting you for an administrator password. Nothing is stored or
kept by the script. You can open the extracted file in Automator to
examine the source code if you wish.

2. Double-click the file to extract it.

3. Place the extracted file in this directory (create the directory if
needed):

/Library/Services.

4. Right-click /Applications/Utilities/Console, and choose Services >
Open As Administrator.

5. Supply the credentials to a Mac OS X administrative user account when
prompted.

Console will open in administrator mode, allowing you to view all logs.

Duly stashed for the next time it goes to hell. In the past 20 hours,
all has been fine again.

This is the only thing I can identify that took place around the time
of the black-screen madness this morning. It's repetitive, but then
there is another item in there so I posted about 3 iterations of the
whole mess in hopes you can analyze it. Thanks for even the slightest
hint that I don't have to buy a new box:

/var/log/system.log file. Look for any entries time stamped just before

write it, and I've managted to snatch what is likely too much

What time did the incident actually occur? Without knowing that, sifting
through countless log entries is a real pain.

What version OS X are you running on this machine?

These two messages seem to indicate that the machine is saving your work
before going to sleep.

This message seems to indicate your machine is waking up. The time stamp
is the same, though. That's weird. Sleep followed by immediate wake?

Not sure what this means.

I'm curious: what do you get when you execute this command in a terminal
window?:

pmset -g assertions

Have you tried disabling any menu extras you have installed that might
interfere with the normal operation of WindowServer?

I've read reports of Google Chrome causing problems with sleep in the
past. Do you use Chrome regularly?

Does this problem occur only in your user account? Have you tried
creating a new temporary OS X user account to see if the problem happens
there?

Tough with that episode to tell for sure. I'm trying to narrow down a
trap where the instant it happens I can see exactly where it's at.

I'm unsure where "menu extras" really begin or end. Do you mean
anything that lays at the top of the finder screen on the right? Like
Fantastical, 1Password, DropBox, et al?

> I've read reports of Google Chrome causing problems with sleep in the
> past. Do you use Chrome regularly?

I don't use it at all.

And remember, as I frequently forget myself, *this is not sleep*. I
can continue to type, Cmd-Tab to other applications, click and drag,
cursor through lists. When I move my mouse to a hot-corner, then pull
it out (this is how I "wake" the screen), I see that the things I've
been doing through this non-sleep-but-blacked screen--this zombie
state--have all taken place in the dark.

> Does this problem occur only in your user account? Have you tried

I have not. But then it has choked me for 10 minutes, or an hour, and
then gone away. Already during this session, it has ridden me like a
mule through 8 to 12 passes. I quit a bunch of programs or do some
other something, and, as it has this minute, it abates. If I were to
reboot in another session there'd be no reason to think it would
necessarily do this for a week!

If I had a consistent way to make it do it's thing, I'd consider taking
it for repair.

It's maddening!

Next time it happens jot down the exact time. That way when you scan the
logs after, you know what you are looking for.

Yeah, nothing really interesting there.

Right - anything that adds something to the menu bar at the top of the
screen, usually on the right side of it.

Ok. Just checking.

Understood, but it still may have something to do with the sleep
functionality of the OS.

Well I don't know what I'm looking for, but am assured this last time
that it at 11:45:30-11:45:55-ish. My on-board clock said 11:45 and I
kept waking it up quickly to get a feel for how far before 11:46 it
was. I'm guessing 15-20 seconds.

For your perusal, all the schmutz from 11:45:

Unless I am missing something, the log mostly repeats the same handful
of messages over and over. Nothing really sticks out, other than the
strange sleep/wake thing we discussed earlier.

I'd run with as many (all) menu extras disabled for a while to see if
the problem remains.

I'd also create a test OS X user account to see if the problem is
limited to your particular account.

I should point out that the reason I'm back up and reporting, is that I
unplugged the iMac from the back for 30 seconds. Then zapped the PRAM
and let the thing make it's startup noise 8 times before I released the
opt-apple-p-r keys.

Eight times is excessive. Once or twice is all that is needed.
