Was copying a file to an external usb disk and while it was in the
process, tried to also move it from the desktop to a particular other
folder on the internal startup hard disk. Notice came up saying

"“nameOfFile” can’t be opened right now because it’s being used by
another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash.
Try again when the current task is complete."

No problem, of course; in designing an OS it would be hard to think of
everything down to the last detail!

this is a documented feature
do you see it as a bug

have you filed a feature request
I don't know how but maybe it's possible

It (the notice you chose not to quote) seems obviously untrue, so is
that a bug or just a bit of minor slipshoddery?

Hardly worth it over so trivial a matter. But, you must understand at
least that there is nothing in heaven or on earth that is so
unimportant that it can't be mentioned on usenet. <g>

maybe the openstandards site will have the specifics about starting

bug, slipshoddery or feature
I guess it's a feature just from my *n{u,i}x experience

but it may be a fun exploratory to try to file a feature request
against macosx
I'd like to read about it because I have no idea how or if it
is possible

That surprised me, why did you say originally "this is a documented
feature"?

because it's documented
how hard was that
how hard did you look for the docs
do you care
someone here no doubt has links to all the docs and aapple may even
host them also

but the body/ccommiittee/whatever for unixx will have the docs too
but please keep going on about nothing it's more productive than
finding an answer to life, universe and everything about mv and cp

actually I think those guys that thrived on mountains of paperwork
in hitchhiker's are equivalent to the unix certification body so
expect to find those docs in triplicate

how big was the file you cp and mv
was it iso9000

What does the Unix specification have to do with Finder behavior? Finder
is an OS X-specific application, not addressed by the POSIX committee.

I think you'll find "Electric Comet" talks a whole lot of BS from a
position of ignorance. He's just not very knowledgeable about these
things. I usually just ignore him.

the OP will be happy to know this
you've narrowed it down
i expected someone to point to the docs, the OP got multiple choices

How would you know? Why would you even guess this? I am getting the
impression that you may be a 12V system plugged directly into a 240V
outlet or maybe even vice-versa. Please check your specs, something
has gone wrong with your Comet.

The OP (me) is already well aware of this.

The question, which you have still not answered, is *what exactly*, is
relevant to the notice I quoted? You keep on snipping the notice that
came up which I quoted and the context in which it came up. And you
don't explain why I should look anything up?

go look at the opengroup website for your answers or keep asking here

look for expected behavior for a mv of the source while a cp of the
source is underway

Of course not. You're changing its location with the second copy. It's
a "move" not a copy. You're changing its source location before the
first copy is finished.

OTOH, if you copy/paste it during the operation (drag (copy) to the
external drive and copy/paste (CMD-C/CMD-V) to the source drive
different folder), there is no issue and both will occur. Of course the
original file will still be in the original place.
