SubjectFinally got my new iMac!
Message-ID<mf4qpk$9c5$1@dont-email.me>
After weeks of research, and asking for help from the denizens of this
group(especially JR and David Empson), I got an Apple iMac 20-inch
2.26GHz Core 2 Duo (Mid 2009) MC015LL/B from Mac of All Trades. It was a
former educational model(checked out the specs on everymac.com) made from
2010 to 2012. It has 8gigs of ram, 160hdd, wireless, SuperDrive. The
only thing it does not have, and not a big deal to me, is built-in
Bluetooth.
Got the entire thing for only $407+shipping, believe me checked out
plenty of sites for refurbed iMacs.
It comes with 10.6 Snow Leopard, but is capable of running the latest
10.10 and above.
Full specs are:
Hardware Configuration

20-inch glossy widescreen TFT LCD display, 1680x1050 resolution
2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    2.0GB (2x1.0GB) PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM, supports up to 8.0GB
160GB Serial ATA hard disk drive @ 7200RPM
    DVD-RW/CD-RW SuperDrive-DL
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics with 256MB GDDR3 shared memory
    AirPort Extreme wireless card (802.11a/b/g/n)
    No Bluetooth
    Bulit-in iSight camera
    1- Mini DisplayPort
    4- USB 2.0 ports
    1- FireWire 800 port
    1- Ethernet port

Should be here in a few days! Finally, I can get into that walled in
garden with Sarah Lane!

Consider more RAM, 2 will be hard going, especially for later than SL.
I guess, 160GB HD is ok just but if you can't stick in something
bigger, at least you can have external HDs.

I did upgrade to the max of 8gigs of ram. It was not that much more.

That'll be plenty, even for Yosemite. You'll even be able to run other
operating systems in virtual machines comfortably with 8 GB.

With 8 GB it will be more than fine.

Thanks, the 8 gigs was the max on this machine, since it was an
"education only" model. It said on the everymac.com site, that this
model was "quietly introduced" with no fanfare, as it was not intended
for the general public.

I run Mavericks on a 2 GB MBA (shared with the video driver) with no
issue. For his intended use it's probably sufficient.

I'd personally haul the screen off, dig in, and slap in a 500 - 1000 GB
HD. But an external drive should do.

How do you "open up" this model iMac? Will I have to get the ifixit tool
kit for this?

You don't need their kit. But you should see the sequence in the link
below.

In and out about 30 - 45 minutes. Then you have to re-install the OS.
So make sure you have the disks for that or pre-install the OS on an
external docking bay first.

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+20-Inch+EMC+2266+Hard+Drive+Replacement/919

Read the entire sequence first. There are some delicate wires in a
couple places.

A single suction cup will do the job. You don't need anything as fancy
as on the iFixit site.

You'll need some smallish torx drivers that your local hardware store
should have as well as small Phillips. Or order the iFixit kit.

You have to be careful when removing the bezel - lots of small fine
wires (camera, microphone).

Congrats. Your biggest worry with that machine is overheating and
component failure, which goes for most machines that age. I'd open it up
and give it a thorough dusting, first thing, followed by erasing the
hard drive and installing a fresh known-good pristine copy of Mac OS X
to start fresh without any potential nasties.

> Finally, I can get into that walled in garden with Sarah Lane!

It may be a "walled garden", but the "open" alternatives come with
prices I am not willing to pay in terms of clunkiness of the user
experience and so on. I've owned and developed software for all of the
mainstream operating systems, and Apple's are in many ways more user
friendly and also preferable from a software development standpoint, and
allow me to get shit done faster and more efficiently than most of the
others. The price of "open" is your time. And my time is worth more than
that, which is why I giggle a bit inside whenever I see someone using
the phrase "walled garden".

Where would I get the CDs/DVDs for the OS? I thought that the
discontinued those a long time ago? The only CDs that I have are:
10.2 Jaguar(the disks that came with my 2002 G4)
10.3 Panther(boxed)
10.4.11(disks only)
All of these are for the PPC only. Would I have to go on eBay to find
the OS disks?
Are these easy to open up and blow the dust out?

Technically the computer should have come with the original discs, but
wen buying second hand they are often missing.

eBay or similar is probably the best option. If you've got more money
than sense, then you can buy the discs from http://hardcoremac.com (I
have never bought anything there since the prices are ridiculous for
such old software, so I cannot vouch for how good / bad their service
is).

Wow, those prices are outrageous! The Lion thumb drive on Amazon is like
$20 or less! I have been looking on ebay, and found all the stuff that I
would need.

There are no discs for 10.7 and later, but you may be able to find 10.6
DVDs at Amazon or at We Love Macs <http://www.welovemacs.com/>.

Thank you, I did find the stuff on Amazon, the Lion thumb drives, and
even Mavericks and 10.10 on Kingston thumb drives that you can buy from

I thought that, buy why would Amazon be selling pirated stuff?

Some stuff on Amazon is from other companies who sell through Amazon.
Amazon might be taking the supplier at their word and not even checking
for obvious things like the nonexistence of a retail Mavericks
installer.

I recently bought three copies of iWork '09 via Amazon, so I'd have them
handy for other people who needed them for migrating from older versions
(or AppleWorks) to the latest ones (or who just disliked the latest
iWork apps). The actual seller was another company.

When they arrived, I found they all had "Not for resale" (or equivalent)
written on them - they were bundled discs with Macs which were not
supposed to be separated from the computer they were sold with. I didn't
have a valid licence to use them myself, and I certainly didn't want to
sell them to anyone else (even to recover my costs).

I complained to Amazon, and they refunded the purchase price (without
asking for them back).

In my years with OS/2, I bought old stuff that had those stickers on
them, but by that time, OS/2 was, unfortunately, gone. I also got a lot
of stuff from former IBM workers at Boca and from Austin, who had
actually developed/written the software.
I applaud you for not actually using, or giving the stuff away. In the
big scheme of things, some old software disks really don't matter, but
one's personal ethics do.
