You're pretty full of it. The OP asked if he could get his battery
replaced at a pre-booked Genius Bar appointment. You replied saying his
wouldn't get his battery replaced at the Genius Bar, because it's not a
"tech repair center", and it would be unlikely he could get it replaced
at a tech repair center either because the MacBook is supposedly
"difficult to open". Then the OP wen to the Genius Bar, where they
replaced the battery while he waited, proving you completely wrong. It
didn't matter to the OP how many different departments there are. It
doesn't matter to me, and it doesn't matter to anyone else who brings
their Apple devices in for repair. You are the only one who seems to be
so concerned about departments and such. The rest of us just want to get
our shit fixed. If the OP had listened to you, he would have no doubt
avoided bringing it to Apple, which is silly since he says he was very
pleased with the service they completed for him. It's perfectly fine if
you just will not admit it when you are wrong. More fool you. But for
any others who are reading this, it's clear to see you were indeed
wrong. And that's a good thing.

Bull. The Genius Bar is the appropriate place to start for all repairs,
since they have the knowledge and connections to get your device where
it needs to go efficiently for any repair that needs to be done. They
even have third-party Apple-authorized repair shops they work with for
devices that Apple no longer supports.
The only one wasting anyone's time here is *you*. What a dolt!

It aint exactly interstellar rocket science. :-\ Maybe it's different where you live, but here, the only way to get to the Apple Store's repair department is through the Genius Bar. Even if you know exactly what the problem is and what you want done (in my recent case, a new hard drive for my iMac), an appointment at the Genius Bar and having the GB run all sorts of diagnostic tests on it was the only way to get it through to the repair department. -- K. Although, I will say that once the Genius figured out that I knew what I was talking about he skipped to the final test which confirmed the hard drive was bad, so instead of waiting through half a dozen tests, it was only two. -- http://2blog.kreme.com Hey, baby, I've got just the cure for that penis envy back at my apartment...

No. They are the first line of contact. Similar to a auto concession
garage where you see the "technical advisor" at the front, not the
mechanics in the back.

I once worked in a type of sort of place like that. Customers (or
"clients", sometimes) had to go through the Help-desk or Customer
Centre or Service Centre whatever they were that week to get anything
done. Some insiders did know the direct numbers of us support people
but calling us was supposed to be a no-no. Even if it did get things
fixed with less hassle.
It was all about bean-counting. If a support call went direct it
wasn't counted and the solution wasn't recorded and the front-line
helpy guys didn't get their stats up.
Apple shops look to be organised the same way.

Not for them.
No audit trail, no reason to employ techs.
Accountants don't care how busy you are, they only care how busy you
have *logged* yourself as being.
Reality isn't real. Paperwork *is*.

Are you seriously suggesting that there's an important distinction between two groups of people in the same building when they act together to solve the customer's problem? What difference does it make whether the work is done by the guy at the Genius Bar and the repair tech in the back room? He made an appointment, and Apple did the requested work. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

Me to Genius person: "I need to change power supply for my 2009 Mac Pro." Genius: you need to bring your unit here so I can power it up and check it before I can schedule a time when you bring your unit it for repairs if necessary. And only once the unit is brought in for repairs would spare parts be ordered he said. So it wasn't even a case of "let me know when the spare power supply has arrived so I can bring my unit in". End result: got power supply from internet. (Apple doesn't sell parts) If I could have scheduled a repair appointment where I bring unit in to be repaired while I waited, I would have considered it.

Mac Pros aren't hugely common, so they probably don't keep parts in stock for them, especially older models. They are unlikely to order a part first in case you change your mind, then they're stuck with a part they can't use.

I had a bad hard disk a few years ago: They insisted on the following: 1. Book appointment with Genius - bring iMac. 2. Get their appraisal and then they book the repair. 3. Turnaround time 5 - 10 business days. Even though it was a warranted repair I just bought a new hard disk and did it myself.

He scheduled a time with a Genius, brought it in, the Genius sent it to the back room, the work got done while he waited, and he walked out with the fixed device. So the only issue is that the work wasn't actually done by the Genius. But as far as the customer is concerned, it might as well have been. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

What difference does it make whether > the work is done by the guy at the Genius Bar and the repair tech in the > back room? He made an appointment, and Apple did the requested work. They act together, but they are separate departments. It's like phoning up your ISP to pay the monthly bill, so you phone the tech staff who then forward your call to the accounts department ... yes, they can forward the phonecall and will do so politely (probably while thinking you're a moron for phoning the wrong department), but you've wasted their time - time that another person with a real tech problem could have used. Same here. Wasting the Genius Bar staff timeslot that someone else could use, instead of just taking it direct to the repair staff. The Genius Bar staff have limited timeslots - that's why you have to book them.

I don't think it's quite like that. More like a helpdesk where the organisation wants a single point of entry and does its best to mask the other teams behind it to make it difficult to contact them directly. The message externally is "If have a problem then you take it to a Genius". Can you point me at any Apple documentation that suggests this department are publically accessible? > Same here. Wasting the Genius Bar staff timeslot that someone else > could use, instead of just taking it direct to the repair staff. The > Genius Bar staff have limited timeslots - that's why you have to book > them. The point is that many of us would like not to waste the slots for this stuff, and I would certainly like to not have to sit there and wait 15 minutes whilst someone else is having the OS on their Mac or iPhone reinstalled or some other task. As I mentioned, my last repair was a screen fault, the issue was visible within about 2 seconds of powering the machine up so it was clear from the off. However it still took about 15 minutes and a change of Genuis before they'd managed to book the machine in and take it off of me. You've not really commented on HOW to actually do what you suggest. So maybe you can clarify what store you have had this experience in and for what kind of repair? -- -> The email address used in this message *IS* valid <-

Good grief ... the sheer brainless idiocy of the average Internet user
is astounding. What part of "separate departments" is so difficult to
understand?!?!?!?!?
The really should take out that clause on modems that says "switch
brain off before use". :-\

The irony is you're very near the top of that list.

What part of "it doesn't fucking matter" do you not understand? The only
one hemming and hawing over different departments here is *you*, and it
simply does not matter.

If you were a 14th century Catholic you would be arguing as to how many
angels could dance on the head of a pin. An equally pointless and
fatuous argument.
