that store is clearly not prepared for outages. i've been in stores
that have had network outages as well as power outages and all they do
is pull out the mechanical sliders and carbon paper receipts. it's
slower but it doesn't shut anything down. at most, they have to find a
runner to go to the shelf and get the price since it won't show up
automatically on the cash register.

as for cash, try buying airline tickets that way. you'll very likely be
flagged as a potential terrorist and get the full gropedown when you go
through security and may be detained if you cross a border and have to
go through customs. large amounts of cash may even be confiscated.

try buying big ticket items with cash. are you going to carry $1000+
cash everywhere? some places won't even accept cash.

try disputing something with cash. with a credit card, the charge is
blocked until the merchant resolves it. with cash, the merchant will
say fuck off, i have your money.

if a card is lost or stolen, your liability is $0. if cash is lost or
stolen, you are out the cash and don't expect to see it again.

so will the muggers.

Still doesn't matter. If it's broken it's broken. If party A or party B
is at fault for the breakeage and therefore responsible for the fix,
it's still broken for me.

Ha, with customers with grocery carts with dozens of items in them?

Cards are indeed useful for that.

Cards are indeed useful for that too. I'm talking about cash as an
alternative for Apple Pay - which most people use for making small
puchases which can just as easily and securely be done with cash.

The time to dispute a cash transaction is before handing over the
cash, because the transaction is settled at that point. There's nothing
further to dispute, unlike a card purchase that is not settled until
clearing the bank.

My point is that more and more people are flashing around a $700 iPhone
because they are afraid of losing or being mugged of $10 cash.
Everywhere I go people have their $700 iPhones in their hands in plain
view of the world. Why are people not concerned about being mugged of
that, but they are worried about losing $10 cash concealed in their
pocket? I don't get it.

Nothing even remotely like as easily on ensuring you have enough
cash alone.

Wrong when you discover the item is defective when
you get it home and get it out of the blister pack etc

unlike a card purchase that is not settled until

No, they have the iphone for other reasons.

They aren't.

You did get that right, likely by accident.

not true. for instance, the product may be defective and you don't find
out until later, or the services rendered were not what was agreed
upon, such as from an auto mechanic or home repair company.

they're not afraid of losing $10 cash.

they want the convenience of not needing to deal with cash and carrying
coins.

That's certainly not why I own an iPhone. And I don't "flash" it around,
either.

I admit I avoid going out when it's not absolutely necessary and I don't
tend to hang around crowded places just the kill time; but I don't know
or see any of these people you are talking about when I'm out and about.
Where are they all hiding?

That's being disingenuous. You walk down a street in any city or even
any small town and see lots of people staring into smartphones, holding
them to their heads etc. They may not all be $700 phones, but a thief
would just grab it anyway. On the other hand, theft has dropped
considerably since the introduction of "kill switches."

Seriously, what little patch of paradise do you inhabit where no one on
your streets uses a phone?

That's not what he said. He said people were flashing around $700
iPhones because they were afraid of being mugged.

Doesn't work for Interac transactions (debit) in Canada.

The chain "The Bay" had such an outage in boxing day. They didn't pull
out any sliders, they just let the lines grow, accepting those with cash
to get to the front.

You need to realise that with the advent of POS terminals, banks may
have set a "authorize all transactions" floor limit of $0. Which means
that the sliders would have to be accompanied with a telephone call to
authorize all transactions. Staff may not even be trained on this since
they were born well after those things stopped being done.

Doesn’t happen often enough to matter and makes no sense to be
farting around with cash with every transaction instead of just having
some cash available for when those uncommon events actually happen.

You get that result if you only use cash in that situation too.

Like hell they did, they were just pissed off, not panicked.

Makes no sense to be farting around with cash all
the time just because that happened once in 10 years.

That isn't the only thing you don’t understand.

Which is covered by their insurance if they do get robbed of it.

No thanks. I still use it for garage/yard sales and the farmer's
market, and which I could just wave the phone instead.

Oh, I use cash for small purchases and where I would have to hand my
credit card to the cashier. Otherwise, I'll use Apple Pay if it's
available or swipe my credit card if Apple Pay is not available.

We wouldn't even be having this discussion if the haters weren't

Again (without hatred) Apple's desire for a narrow submission program
was a large part of the issue. That is being widened to improve the
situation.

That's not what I asked. Here - I'll spell it out for you: How do you
know that Apple's desire for a narrow submission program was a large
part of the issue? I doubt you can answer this question - not that it
even matters.

The cards in question were Yellow Path cards where the banks in question
knew the information that had been provided did not match bank records.
It was then up to the banks in question to contact customers to use more
scrutiny to verify their identity. Some banks did this well and have low
fraud rates. The banks in question, however, did not do a good job, and
have high fraud rates as a result. Apple Pay users have reported that
different banks use very different procedures and questions for Yellow
Path cards. Some banks only asked for the last four digits of the card
holder's social security number - something that is often readily
available to those who have lists of credit card account numbers (and
other personal info) obtained through illegal means.

They mention that they think Apple is providing more information, but
with no references. And you swallowed it, hook, line, and sinker.

It obviously must have been otherwise the fraud rate wouldn’t have
spiked if you had to get your bank to add the card to ApplePay manually.

> The cards in question were Yellow Path cards

You don’t know that.

> where the banks in question knew the information
> that had been provided did not match bank records.

You don’t know that either. ALL you know is that the fraud rate spiked.

That may have been because there doesn’t need to be any physical
card at all and so its easy for anyone to buy a card off the net and
add it to ApplePay and see what they can get away with.

> It was then up to the banks in question to contact
> customers to use more scrutiny to verify their identity.

But when Apple doesn’t give the banks enough information
to cheaply decide which cards that needs to be done with...

Its hardly surprising that some banks took the expensive
approach of verifying them all and some had enough of
a clue and notified all their customers that their card had
been added to ApplePay and plenty of other did nothing.

> Some banks did this well and have low fraud rates. The

Just as true of all cards.

> Some banks only asked for the last four digits of the card

Because that is quite cheap to do and isn't going to piss
the paranoid customers who don’t give their full social
security number to anyone who demands it off and
doesn’t risk exposing those numbers to criminal staff.

Nothing was swallowed hook, line, and sinker. Apple never denied that

I don't give a rat's ass who you believe as long as you don't spread
opinions you read somewhere on the internet as facts with nothing at all

Except of course for YOUR opinions which you are allowed to state as
facts and nobody is ever allowed to challenge them (and if they do, they
are qualified of trolls, Apple haters etc).

Do you realise you do exactlty as you wish to prohibit all others from
doing ?
