Ahhh, "regional spelling", so does that mean Australians spell it as
"coloar" and Canadians spell it as "coloir" ... nope, didn't think so.

Ahh, but spelling is but one aspect... fanny pack is one example. A poof jumps on your back, do you let him do it, or do you pull him off ? Lots of expressions vary from area to area.

Expressions, maybe, although that first one is a bad example. "Fanny pack" has different meanings because Americans changed the meaning of the word "fanny" to suit themselves. It's similar to the idiocy of Microsloth constantly ignoring the established standards to do things their own way, then trying to force everyone else to follow them while cause mess and confusion in their wake. :-\

Are you seriously saying it doesn't exist as a word meaning (as Wikipedia delicately puts it) a vulva? I posted this before. I was thinking more that he might be an American ex-pat, living in Essex somewhere nice; bit of an Anglophile, idealizes the Britain that he thinks existed between the wars. Although, having just watched Peaky Blinders, I'm not sure if that's the paradise that Billy Bragg and Julian Barnes write about. Well, Billy's a bit pessimistic, I reckon. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. D'ye think Jane Austen would have called > one of her heroines Fanny Price if the word had such connotations? According to dictionary.com: "[1920+; fr earlier British fanny, ''vulva,'' perhaps fr John Cleland's 18th-century heroine Fanny Hill]" Mansfield Park was written a few decades after Fanny Hill, so presumably the vulva meaning wasn't generally known until somewhat later. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
