I remember one time years ago when I was changing read/write permissions
in a Get Info box and suddenly realized that I was using chmod--but
without having to remember the syntax for chmod! Yay Apple!!

long ago, back when apple had a/ux, there was something called commando
which put a graphical interface on top of unix commands so you didn't
need to memorize all the cryptic options. it was great.

Oh yeah! I remember that. Fun stuff. One of these days I need to see if
I can get A/UX running in a VM. Shoebill looks promising:

Not long ago, i tried to sort files by modified time and Finder
couldn't do it. Then I realized that Finder was not even using
ls properly so I had to use a term window and do it right.
Yay aapl!

bullshit.

finder sorts by mod time just fine.

It's a pretty odd idea that Finder should be using ls,
anyway... "Electric Comet" appears to have a pretty shaky idea of what's
going on.

Nope. The OP is aware that there is a command-line tool named chmod that
changes file modes, but is not familiar with the command-line switches
it supports. The OP is also aware that the Mac OS X Finder "Info" window
allows you to change file modes through a graphical interface. Keep
trying, though.

You simply did not know what you were doing. I just tried it; it took
me under ten seconds.

List view. If Date Modified isn't one of the columns, open "View
Options" and check "Date Modified". Then click on the header of the
Date Modified column.

The finder does not (and never has) used ls, either properly or
improperly. But you can sort by date modified.

But it does use chmod
and OP knows chmod but knows none of its options
yet chmod has to have options or it doesn't work
so sounds like a discontinuity here
