#71268 — How to configure default settings for Preview?

SubjectHow to configure default settings for Preview?
Message-ID<me704b$6ap$5@dont-email.me>
something real abot computing

Is there a way to configure the default settings for PReview?

for example how to set the default save format jpeg instead of
png or which selection type i.e. something instead of rectangle
selection

I know not much about macs but was hoping there's got to be a way

No.

Something being what, exactly?

Doubt it. Preview is just a little preview app, mostly. It supports some
basic editing, but isn't meant to be a full-featured image editing
application. Sounds like what you want is an actual image editor.

ok, changing default settings is considered full-featured

You obviously don't use preview much and I don't either but clearly
more than you and you would be surprised how much you can do with it

the interface is deceptively simple

I use it every day - just not much for editing since I have better tools
available.

The usual ones, depending on what I am doing at the time:

Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer

Affinity Photo and Designers have essentially taken the place of
Photoshop and Illustrator for me, and I couldn't be happier about that.

> are they free as in beer

The ones I use? No. That doesn't mean free ones aren't readily
available though. I choose the ones I use because they are better than
free alternatives, naturally. The phrase, "You get what you pay for"
does apply to image editors.

> i just want some default settings, how hard can it be saving
> clicks is significant and important

So go forth and find an image editor that supports that. There are
*plenty* to choose from out there. I'd start with a simple web search
for something like "mac image editor" or perhaps "free mac image
editor", and go from there.

> can I binary edit Preview or does apple sign their softwares

Apple does sign apps, yes.

> on linux or mac

What about them?

> or maybe you're a <GASP> closet windows user, nah

Of course I use Windows. Most of the world does. I just don't choose to
run it on my own personal hardware, except through a VM on my Mac, and
only when absolutely necessary. : )

> i need to try one called gimp on the imac it is scriptable

GIMP has always been free and open source. It runs fine on OS X. Have at
it.

Nope. You want those features, buy an image editor. Pixelmator or
Graphic Converter or live with just rectangular edit.

Yep, you obviously don't know about "Don't like our defaults? See
Figure 1."

It does a lot for such a little app. Any real heavy lifting, I break
out Pixelmator.

it does those selections already
if you read the OP carefully you can see that the problem is
that the default selection is a rectangle shape

Will have to look at pixlemator also mentioned by others

although isn't there some kind of screen recorder that can be played
back for gui apps?

Default selection is dependent on type of document. Preview uses a text
selection by default for a text document, and rectangle selection for
image documents.

This is a context driven default, so it could not be part of defaults
used when application lanches since the second you open a document, a
new context is set depending on document type.

Generally speaking, default settings are configured in preferences. And
sometimes you have to access preferences while no document is opened.
However, not sure this is possible in more recent versions of OS-X as it
tends to close apps when last window has been closed.

As I remember it just didn't work the way it should when I'd try later
versions. Maybe they finally corrected it.

But then, I'm still using Photoshop 3.0.5 too because later ones seem
ridiculously complex and unintuitive, lol.

Photoshop 3.0.5?? What OS are you running that on?
It certainly won't run on any flavor of OSX. You might get it to run on
a VM Win NT partition.

I guess you aren't doing too much photo editing, because you are
missing some revolutionary changes and improvments in Photoshop.
