#71255 — Why doesn't Apple update the kernel instead of outdating hardware/software?

SubjectWhy doesn't Apple update the kernel instead of outdating hardware/software?
Message-ID<me6sjq$tic$1@dont-email.me>
Since OSX is Unix based, why doesn't Apple continually update the kernel
instead of outdating hardware and software? Linux continues to update
the kernel to keep hardware/software current. I am going to buy an iMac,
but the variety of dates, mid-2010, late 2009, early 2011, is very
confusing. The hardware specs are very good, but it seems like features
are being outdated with constant updates to OSX. Wouldn't kernel updates
keep more hardware current with the latest OSX? People who are in the
"walled in garden of Apple" would still buy the latest stuff, but for
people who want a good used iMac, could be more assured that buying an
iMac would last longer and be more useful.

what makes you think they don't?

Apple *does* continually update the kernel.

Please provide some specific examples of this that concern you.

So does Apple, and just about every other mainstream operating system
vendor on the planet.

You can't realistically expect older hardware to be able to do
everything newer hardware can do. For instance, if an older machine does
not have the Bluetooth hardware capable of Bluetooth LE, any
functionality that relies on Bluetooth LE to function will not work.
Updating the operating system (kernel included) cannot force it to work
since the older hardware itself is deficient.

Only hardware updates will keep hardware current.

You haven't done much research into this. Otherwise you'd know that Macs
tend to keep their usefulness and run more current operating systems
with more functionality enabled for far longer than their typical
Windows- or Linux-based counterparts.

I have been doing a lot of research, mostly with advice from you. You
advised me not to buy a Core2 Duo, and to go for at least an i3 or i5. I
have found a few: Apple iMac 21.5-inch 3.06GHz Core i3 (Mid 2010) MC508LL/
A for $649 from mac of all trades: Apple iMac 21.5-inch 2.5GHz Quad-core
i5 (Mid 2011) MC309LL/A for $799, again from mac of all trades.
I must have a Super Drive, so I am limited to the iMacs that still had
the optical drive.
Both of these can be ram upgraded to around 16 or 32.
As to my Linux machines, both Lenovo T400s from 2008, and they are
running the newest Linux drivers, software, browsers, and support three
Virtual machines.

The Core i5 is a way better buy. It has the faster CPU, more level 3
cache, a CPU interface that is double the speed, and a faster video card
with double the VRAM. It also has a Thunderbolt port. It's an overall
better machine.

Not really. You could use an external drive like one of these:

<http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/>

I recommend upgrading the RAM to no less than 8GB if you plan to run the
latest OS X operating system.

My 2008 Mac Pro is running the latest stuff too, and I can easily run
multiple VMs. I expect to use this machine for another 3-5 years before
I replace it.

<snip>

You're not limited to anything. You can easily add an external Apple
Super Drive (or any other external CD / DVD burner) and the system
software will use them.

You can add an external Blu-ray drive instead, but they usually require
some extra driver software so you may have to be more careful about the
make.

OS X has built-in support for at least some Blu-ray drives, including
reading and burning data discs from Finder. I have a Pioneer mechanism
(which I got while I was running Mac OS X 10.6.8, so I know it works at
least that far back), and OWC also sells Sony and LG ones which I expect
work without drivers.

Blu-ray video (playing or authoring) requires third party software.

I bought a cheapo BD drive and it works perfectly well in OS X. I've
used it to rip a few BluRays.

uh-oh sounds like a compatibility issue with blu-ray on the mac
does any mac come with blu-ray drive from the aapl store?

What, by doing the opposite?

You can call it whatever you like. It's absolutely true. Macs are not
only more useful from the start and stay useful longer, but they also
have *much* better resale value than your average junk Win/Linux PC.

No in fact they are slowly being crippled by aapl lack of support

the burden lies with you but I don't expect it'll ever show
as you're just a chanter repeating aapl-isms

No such thing. Besides why would you ask owners of an iPad about
whether Macs are more useful than linux and whether they stay useful
longer?

Nice try at moving the goal post, but you've failed. iPads aren't Macs,
dummy.

BTW, I own an Apple iPad 1 and there's nothing wrong with it.

It's absolutely true that most Macs have better resale values than your
average PC.

Do troll on, if you feel you must, though.

I sold a 6 year old iMac 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo for near $1000.

No PC will come close unless the included monitor is very high end.

Not at all. Buy a reasonably priced external USB drive or Apple's Super
Drive.

Get an iMac which can easily have memory added (not the current 21.5"
for example, but the 27"). Otherwise getting in there to add memory is
a big chore.

For example, get an 8 GB machine and add 16 GB for a total of 24.
Cheaper to get memory from Crucial and others than from Apple.

You can easily run a few Linux' at a time on it in parallel with OS X.

For example, iMac (mid 2007) supports Yosemite. That's about eight
years old. That's the oldest model that supports Yosemite; the most
recent "old" model that supports Yosemite is the 13" MacBook Pro, at
mid 2009, which is "only" six years old.
