Actually, today is "Americans write the date the wrong way round day".

It's 14/3/15.

Well, actually 2015.3.14 is the one and only 'right way round', i.e.
ISO. (Note: choice of delimiter and leading zero are allowed options
with the user.)

Well, the ISO format can be quite useful. I learned this quite a few
years ago while traveling around Africa and other parts of the Third
World where I had to communicate with many nationalities whose 'native'
date formats all varied.

For example, if you leave a note for friends to meet you for lunch at
the Thorntree Cafe in Nairobi on 4/5/whatever, it's a PITA if you show
up on April 5 and they show up on May 4, when you're half way up
Kilimanjaro.

ISO solves this. I have met almost no one who is confused by yyyy.mm.dd,
even if they have never seen it before. I did have one fellow confirm
that the mm was indeed the month not the day, but month was his default
assumption.

So ISO is useful and I use it.

Well quite. Which is why I'd be more inclined to write the date in an
unambiguous way, when there's any chance of it being misinterpreted, by
*writing* the date out in a 3-letter manner. Such as 15-Mar-2015.

Assuming English "Mar" means local whatever the third month is.

The fact that the rest of what I was saying/writing would be in English

The point of my anecdotal paragraph above is that it's often _very_
important to express dates, and other information, in a
nationality-neutral way. By using _all_ conventional numbers and no
language, you avoid upsetting, i.e. biasing against you, people whose
help you may need, with the exception of those few groups who don't use
'western' numbers; but they're usually so used to the difference they
don't take offense.

I always liked that way best. It works like an odometer.

Other patterns reflect the way the date is used in local speech.
15-03-2015 = "today is the 15th of March, 2015". That's how a
British person is likely to say it, and therefore write it. North
Americans would say "today is March 15th, 2015" and it would be written
accordingly.

I hate periods as delimiters, especially in phone numbers. What used to
be (604) 555-1212 became 604.555.1212. This is especially prevalent in
advertisements for overpriced urban condominiums.

then use hyphens: 604-555-1212

using () for area codes is obsolete. area codes are part of the number
and should always be used when calling. it won't break anything and in
most areas and certainly on mobile they *must* be used.

I know I personally stopped using that format long ago in favor of

That's what I meant by "and similar", yes. Choose your preferred
delimiter. : ) I prefer dash characters, personally, but am not irked if
someone else chooses another.
