Only two years ... that's pathetic. :-)
I think my Casio watch battery is claimed for five years and has
actually lasts a lot longer than that.

I have you all beat. My steel sundial will last until Sol becomes a red
giant and swallows the Earth. Clearly this means the Apple Watch will
fail miserably.

The amount of power required for a smartwatch far exceeds what could
easily be generated kinetically or via a solar cell.

> If you forget to charge this every day, all you have is a paperweight...

It charges pretty quickly.

I will be curious how much charge it uses from 100% at bedtime to the
next morning. I would be far more likely to charge a watch during the
day or in the evening than over night (based on when I charge my Pebble,
which goes completely dead at least 3 times a month because I forget to
charge it up every few days).

Since the Watch will do a million fold more than the watches you
describe it's like comparing a canoe to a racing yacht. The former
doesn't need fuel other than the user, the later needs fuel to do its thing.

As usual, those who didn't get the iPhone when it came out are those who
don't get the Watch now.

In a sense calling one an iPhone and the other a Watch just confuses
those with little imagination.

A racing yacht would be a sailboat, probably in excess of 50'. A racing
boat needs fuel, but ain't much of a yacht.

OTOH, a motor powered yacht ideally is in excess of 40' and has some
brightwork and stainless steel on her. (not all plastic)

Commodore built some good computers, but was killed years ago by

Seiko has a watch that is digitally controlled but uses a conventional
self-winding works called the Spring Drive.

The Apple Watch is going to sell like hotcakes even though it's pretty
silly. I look forward to seeing the cell phone zombies trying to
simultaneously stare at their phone's screen and their wrist all at the
same time. Makes walking and chewing gum seem easy!

That's actually a pretty interesting observation. The smartphone
obsessives, many of the millions of them, can't seem to avoid
participating in endless texts, tweets, and other bullshit all the day
long. I can't imagine the simplistic utility of the apple watch could
replace the soul-aborbing process they are already involved in. So
even though they are the logical early adopters, I think they may be
the easiest to become dissatisfied with it.

Not if it does *one* thing the phones do not and "fitness" seems to
be the one "killer-app" that most of the Band/Watch makers are pushing
as *their* version of a killer.
Phones don't tend to do "fitness" well without external sensors.
Wtches can do everything from pulse and steps to blood sugars. This
could be the niche the iWatch reigns in.
 Or not.
For my part I'm very sure I don't want Apple, Microsoft, Google and
the USAlien spies services knowing how bloody unfit I am. I get
sufficient nagging from my very own doctors, thank you.

Not at all. It is definitely an extension to the iPhone and they depend
on each other for data. The phone is both display, app host and sensor.
Far more than a watch of course.

As to the battery cycle I don't sleep with a watch on so if it charges
during that time then all is well. Though having to bring another
charging device on travel is admittedly a PITA. A Y cable for charging
both phone and watch might be useful.

did they design and engineering and marketing teams ever stop and
ask any of their test "subjects" if they would even wear a watch

I think they forgot that one question

1. How do you like it?
Respondent: It looks nice and it's pleasing

2. Do you like the features?
Respondent: The features are very nice and useful

3. Do you like our price ranges?
Respondent: Yes it's broad enough to appeal to a lot of people

4. Do you like the colors?
Respondent: Good color options

5. Would you wear the watch regularly?
Respondent: Yes

6. Do you wear a watch?
Respondent: No

drum roll please

7. Would you buy this AAPL Watch?
Respondent: No I check time on my iPhone

It's called an "Apple Watch". AAPL is a stock symbol. Using stock
symbols in place of actual company names is pretty silly, and doesn't
fool the rest of us into thinking you are any smarter or cooler than you
actually are.

Just because you say so. Whatever.

That must be why so many companies are clamouring to get into the smart

You're missing the fact that the Apple Watch isn't designed to be just
a watch, or even just a watch with stopwatch and alarm functions.

It's currently designed to basically be a secondary display / input
device for those who are too lazy to take their iPhone out of their
pocket / purse / briefcase.

Later this year Apple will be releasing the Watch Kit programming
functions that will allow developers to create Apple Watch specific
apps, which may or may not make it far more useful by itself.

The real issue with the Apple Watch is that it's simply too expensive.
If it had been released at an iPod Shuffle-like price point, then it
would have made more sense.

If your target market is rich people for whom a watch is a status
symbol, that market is not dwindling.

Very niche

even clocks for the home market is tanking and has for a long time
I see fewer people wearing a watch
athletes wear heart mons, etc. but most people look at their phone

no one wants extra stuff to haul around, etc.
