He just can't stand the new Mac Pro and takes every opportunity to troll
it here. He hates that there is no internal drive expansion capability
and thinks 1 TB of internal storage is not enough. And he wishes
everyone else felt the same. We don't.

not really, since the disks are going to consume power regardless of
what box they're in.

The argument was made that a new MacPro or a Mac Mini would consume far
less power than an old MacPro.

The problem is that neither the new MacPro nor the MacMini support
extra disks, so the comparison is not correct. You would have to compare
the new MacPro or MacMini with external storage box against older MacPro
if you were to compare oranges with oranges.

Or, if the new MacPro were able to get 8 terabytes, it might be able to
be compared against 4* 2TB currently available on old MacPros. Alas,
maximum is 1TB.

Cue Jolly Roger claiming that the 512GB or 1TB is more than enough for him.

The fact is that the comparison is not correct when your old MacPro is
loaded with far more than what the new MacPro can support.

nonsense. of course they support extra disks.

yep, and it's still less power, by a lot.

it's more than enough for most people.

few people actually did that.

meanwhile, a new mac pro fits in a backpack.

And it likely will.

Sure it is. The disks will exist and consume power in both cases.

It's more than enough for *lots* of people.

And it's still not a "glorified mini" as you called it in your original

And for the professionals buying a MacPro who need lots of storage? They
aren't popping drives into a chasis anyway, the are connecting to XSAN
over a fibrechannel or something like that to access many TBs of space.

Yep, and they are already doing that with their older model Mac Pro
towers, iMacs, etc.

I don't believe the 600W+ figure anyway. The MacPro didn't have a 1500W
PSU ever. The 2008 had a 980W PSU, but that would not normally pull more
than 400 except at turn on. As far as I can tell, all the MacPro
machines up until the current one had 980W PSUs. The biggest draw for a
MacPro would be having all the slots full with high-power cards.

It's gonna depend who is supplying your power, and what tariff you have.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I've actually had mac / apple versions
of the 4870, 5870 and 7950 over the years (I'm on my 3rd Mac Pro,
having started with a G5). The 7950 was fabulous for the few weeks
that it worked - but when it died no replacements could be found (the
Sapphire warranty was 'return to dealer for replacement') so I got a
refund and ended up with the flashed 6870 that's just died.

But Mac versions of ATI cards are very very expensive. Someone in the
UK is selling a new Apple Radeon 5770 (1GB) on Amazon for £340...

I've not had any Nvidia cards (except the totally useless one that came
in the Mac 1,1), but except for the GTX-680, the ones listed are
broadly similar to early generation Radeon ones in performance. The
GTX 680 looks good - but is astonishingly expensive (circa £470 in UK).

Currently I think the ATI R9 280x is a good option, if this thread is
correct -http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1727497 -
pre-flashed versions on market here for about £250, but apparently it
works as-is anyhow (without boot screen).

The std. GForce 7300GT isn't taht bad, but it depends on what your needs
are. I don't work with heavy graphics or any gaming, but with tons of
text and audio editing. Here the 7300GT will certainly do. - But you're
right, some of the graphics cards are quite expensive - even older used
ones...

I still have the 7300GT/256mb in my small MP1.1/2,66ghz and a 5770HD/1gb
in the larger 3,0ghz MP1.1, and of course there are quite much
difference in performance.:-)

I don't know anything about the R9-series out from experience - only
from what's written on the net. Yes, they seem to be quite usabble for
most work on MacPro.

You may have a look here. There are both new and used ones here on
www.eBay.co.uk - including some of those I mentioned - and some even to
reasonable prices...

Have ordered an R9 280X flashed with Mac EFI ... will post when it
arrives with info about whether it indeed works as described. But
fingers crossed ;)

Ah, well, UK. That's going to be a problem.

Yep - everything is harder here, not helped by the UK's Customs "pay
wall" for high value mail-order from the USA, which allows UK vendors
to keep prices high. Rumour is that a US EU trade pact is in the
works, hopefully if it materialises it will make such cross-border
purchasing easier.

How about this?

<http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sapphire/100352MAC/>

Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it is faster than the stock
cards.

If you look some posts back you'll see that the OP has ordered a similar
card through a UK based store. - Elseway I'd also recommend him to order
from OWC - a store that I've been working with for 25 years now, but
importing into the EU is very expensive caused by the VAT & duty.

But good to see that OWC now also sells those large graphics cards for
the MacPro series....

For others living in the EU the OWC partner MacUpgrade in Belgium -
www.macupgrade.be - might be interesting. Do note here that prices are
all included the Belgian VAT and without duty taxes. Shipping fee is
generally cheaper inside EU, so the total prices will be much similar to
the OWC prices.

Cheers, Erik Richard

OWC has been on sale in EU through grey channels for a while - I've got
an OWC SSD sled in my Mac Pro (and it's great). But an official outlet
in EU is great news - thanks for the heads-up.

Ooch. Those 7950s are expensive even if they're not flashed for the Mac.

I know his (the OP's) Mac Pro is considerably newer than my 2006 1,1 and
thus probably worth that investment, but I've been considering this:

http://tinyurl.com/610geforce

(which leads to this nonsense:)

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/asus-asus-nvidia-geforce-gt610-1gb-dd
r3-pci-e-video-card-gt610-sl-1gd3-l-gt610-sl-1gd3-l/10216421.aspx?path=d3
9b2bfd627522b49d53b216260ffb1den02

I know that I wouldn't get a boot-screen with this, but I can work
around that. These lowish-end Nvidia cards have pretty good reviews
among the HTPC crowd. I just wanna run Yosemite and do some FCPX.
There's also a 2-gig version for not much more money.
