You cannot, read an iPhoto library, after it's been converted to a Photos library. The first time I launched Photos, it _asked_ whether I wanted to import my old iPhoto library (or libraries). I had two; I converted one. The library which was not converted can used with both iPhoto and Aperture. Recall, when Photos asked you whether you wanted to convert your previous library, it also warned it would no long be usable with iTunes or Aperture, once the conversion was applied. -- David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com> Be kind to animals; kiss a shark. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlVL6o4ACgkQUrwpmRoS3uueSwCcDawdutx5rNYW0+iLWDVG7oJ4 VccAnjG5OfIPv8YT0G7JK1Gi5FdTp3CU =haVK -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Then I launched Photo and it didn't warn me about a one-way conversion, just prompted me to "setup" as if it was a naked install. But when I clicked, it then proceeded to huff and puff to import the iphoto library (took some time).

So I checked on my laptop. iPhotos was upgraded in November (likely when I upgraded the laptop from SL to Yosemite). The App store says that iPhotos is up to date (OPEN button instead of UPDATE). Yet, Yosemite 10.10.3 refuses to let me open it saying it isn't compatible with Yosemite. (it worked at 10.10.1) While it is no big deal for the laptop, this has some serious migration issues if I decide to move my desktop to yosemite. I'll have to do much more playing with Photos on laptop to see if this is usable as a photo store and if I can edit images with Photoshop from it as I can with iPhoto. The lack of ability to drag photos to Mail or Twitter is a real drag. Wondering if I should just go with Bridge (or Lightroom since it is available for Yosemite, not for Snow Leopard).

(it worked at 10.10.1) Apple finally got around to enforcing the minimum requirement of iPhoto 9.6.1 for Yosemite. Earlier major versions (e.g. 8.x) may work to some extent, but some aspects would have been broken, or features Apple regarded as important would have been missing. > Delete iPhoto, redownload from App Store. I tried that method yesterday while helping someone, and it failed. When I clicked the INSTALL button, App Store paused briefly then said "This item is temporarily unavailable". I had successfully installed iPhoto 9.6.1 the previous evening on a Yosemite YM, using my own Apple ID. In that case, there was no copy of iPhoto previously installed on the computer. Just now I tried it on a Mountain Lion VM (again with my Apple ID and no previous copy of iPhoto) and it also worked, offering to download an older version (9.4.3). In the case where it failed, a quick search on the error message suggested others had encountered this issue due to something specific to their Apple ID, potentially requiring contact with Apple Support to fix it. This person had recently made a major change to their Apple ID (under someone else's guidance), including changing the associated email address, which changed the Apple ID itself (from the general form abc@xtra.co.nz to xyz@gmail.com). I check the iTunes purchase history using the new form of the Apple ID and it showed purchases dating back several years (while the old form of the Apple ID was in use) so it appears to have just renamed the existing Apple ID. iPhoto was in the purchase history, in early 2014. We had time constraints so I didn't investigate further, and the person ended up sticking with Photos once I'd gone over the major changes. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

App store then offered it to me as "install" from the purchased section and then iPhoto.App worked. It did allow me to use the photo library that was converted to that new one with a warning that changes made in iPhoto would not be reflected in Photos. My plan is likely to just zap the photo library alltogether. Start a new iPhoto one, and import only pictures I need to remove any leftovers from the full library. (Only keep a subset on my laptop). Obviously, that strategy won't work when/if I upgrade my desktop Mac to Yosemite since it holds my full iphoto library.

Perhaps Photos only supports importing the Yosemite iPhoto '11 library, and doesn't handle older versions well? If you already have iPhoto in your App Store "Purchased" list, then you should be able to get the Yosemite-compatible iPhoto '11 (version 9.6.1) by deleting your iPhoto application, and downloading a fresh copy from App Store > Purchased. That may be able to deal better with converting your iPhoto 8.x library. The problem you noted with empty albums reappearing may have been some lingering corruption in your iPhoto library, if it wasn't a compatibility issue. > Is there some plist on the system which lists the Apps that Apple has > chosen to disable ? Removing the Snow Leppard server managtement tools > from that list would be a great help for me. Why bother? They almost certainly won't work even if you managed to hack the system or the applications enough to get around the version checks. As I've told you at least twice already, if you want to run those admin tools on a later system, get another copy of Snow Leopard Server and run it in a VM. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I guess I could zap all photos on my laptop, get the updated iPhoto app amnd then bring relevant albums via USB key to the laptop to build a new iPhoto library from scratch and never use Photos. But since even with iPhoto 09, it was simpler to transfer photos via USB key (export and then import), doesn't make much difference if laptop has iPhoto or Photos. I'll have to do a bit more playing around Photos to see what it is like. So far, the "info" pane seems very small and not sure comments are really visible. Will have to investigate.

Just tested: Mountain Lion and Yosemite can still install iPhoto if you have it on your "Purchases" list in App Store, and there is no copy of iPhoto on the computer (you would need to delete an older version first). Mountain Lion offers to download an older version, and ends up with iPhoto 9.4.3. Yosemite gets iPhoto 9.6.1. I didn't test Mavericks but I expect it would also offer to download an older version and would end up with iPhoto 9.6. Lion and Snow Leopard cannot download iPhoto from App Store via the Purhases list. They get an error message about iPhoto requiring OS X 10.10. The "download a compatible older version" mechanism arrived during Mountain Lion, so I expect the issue is either that this mechanism was not retrofitted to the Lion and Snow Leopard versions of App Store, or that Apple has not made the Lion and Snow Leoapard compatible versions of iPhoto 9.x available via this mechanism. Even if you were to get iPhoto 9.x on Snow Leopard (e.g. installed from an iLife '11 DVD), it wouldn't help with your desire to have a clonable library between Snow Leopard and Yosemite, because the iPhoto 9.x library format changed more than once in updates of iPhoto which only ran on Mountain Lion and later. > I guess I could zap all photos on my laptop, get the updated iPhoto app > amnd then bring relevant albums via USB key to the laptop to build a new > iPhoto library from scratch and never use Photos. > > But since even with iPhoto 09, it was simpler to transfer photos via USB > key (export and then import), doesn't make much difference if laptop has > iPhoto or Photos. For now, iPhoto will be more familiar to you. Long term, iPhoto is deprecated and if you keep updating the operating system on the laptop, it will probably stop working at some point. Photos will be supported going forward, so it is probably a good idea to get used to it, unless you are going to completely stop using Apple's photo management software. > I'll have to do a bit more playing around Photos to see what it is like. > So far, the "info" pane seems very small and not sure comments are > really visible. Since it was an OS announce with an app included it was appropriately
x-posted and should have stayed so, IMO.

If a message is somewhat relevant to one group, but more relevant to another, it is reasonable (and used to be common practice) to crosspost to both groups, with followups set to the more relevant one. This case seemed fine to me. The OP was about an update of OS X, but also mentioned the application Photos which is a new feature of 10.10.3. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

It's a beta OS release with an app cited. X-posted for good reason and
should have remained so, IMO.

Overrated. I mean you have to make decisions and take responsibility
for your actions. A nanny-state is much better. You know you're being
taken care of and somebody is selflessly making the best decisions for
your well being.
