It's not a rule. It's good netiquette. See my other reply to you. It
seems strange that it would bother you so much.

Not so much, I just found it strange.

You might as well have posted one to the sys group about 10.10.3 and a
separate post to the apps group about photo.

"Some NNTP servers drop posts which are crossposted to more than a set
number of newsgroups, especially if no "Followup-To:" line exists."

<http://www.cs.indiana.edu/docproject/zen/zen-1.0_6.html>
"It's also suggested that if an article is crossposted a Followup-To:
header be included. It should name the group to which all additional
discussion should be directed to."

<https://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/usenet/xpost.html>
"If the article has been crossposted to a few groups for a good reason,
consider directing followups to your comment to just one of the groups,"

<http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/cross-post>
"Gratuitous cross-posting without a Followup-To line directing
responses to a single followup group is frowned upon,"

This last one seems to be cribbed from the jargon file which says:

"Jargon File: cross-post: vi.

"[Usenet; very common] To post a single article simultaneously to several
newsgroups. Distinguished from posting the article repeatedly, once to
each newsgroup, which causes people to see it multiple times (which is
very bad form). Gratuitous cross-posting without a Followup-To line
directing responses to a single followup group is frowned upon, as it
tends to cause followup articles to go to inappropriate newsgroups when
people respond to various parts of the original posting."

The post was about
  -an OS release and
  -an app release.

The main point of the titel being "new Photos app"

So followup-To didn't exactly work wrt to the app...

That's for replies, not the OP. Do keep up Lewis.

I've been running 10.10.3 on two machines, but not main machines. The OS
seems perfectly stable, the Photos app is not, but still seems to be
working quite well, even if I have to force-quit it frequently.

There are a lot of things I like about it more than iPhoto.

Idiots and trolls aside, that seems to be the general consensus. I rely
on iPhoto far too much at the moment to run it on my machines. So I'm
eagerly awaiting a less bug-ridden release. : )

Photos doesn't touch your iPhoto library, it migrates it to the new
Photos app. You can still use iPhoto, but the libraries do not sync as
they did with Aperture and iPhoto, so there is 0 risk.

Thanks for the info. Since Apple has set precedents of deleting apps or
making apps that worked no longer work (such as server management
tools), I no longer take it for granted that Apple supplied apps will
work when an upgrade introduces what is to be a replacement for the app.

The fact that iPhoto can co-exist with the new one (for now at least) is
good news.

Do you know if there is a tool to perform migration at a later time ?

For instance, my main iPhone library is on Snow Leopard. I can copy it
to laptop. Would the new "Photos" that would already be installed be
able to copy it over ? Or does that migration happen only during the
Yosemite OS upgrade procedure ?

What?

> or making apps that worked no longer work (such as server management

That's a simple case of OS compatibility. The server management tools
for every version of OS X server require the remote admin console to be
running the same major version of OS X. In some cases it has been
possible to use a later version of the tools to manage an older server
(with limitations), but with the substantial changes in OS X Server
since 10.7, any newer admin tools aren't going to work with a server
that old.

If you want to keep running OS X Server 10.6 and run the admin tools
remotely on a computer which is running a later version of OS X, the
correct solution is either:

(a) get another licence of OS X Server and install it in VM software on
the newer OS, then run the admin tools in the VM (total cost about US$20
to buy OS X Server, with VirtualBox being free); or

(b) use screen sharing or similar to remotely connect to the real server
and run the admin tools there.

> I no longer take it for granted that Apple supplied apps will work

Based on descriptions from reviews, Photos creates a clone of your
iPhone library (via hard links, so it doesn't double the storage
requirements), after which you have two independent photo libraries that
will diverge. Any changes subsequently made to the library in either app
would not affect the other app.

For example, if you made subsequent changes to a photo in iPhoto, that
would either create a new file for the modified photo (if it was the
first change to the original), or replace the existing modified photo
with a new one. In either case, the new modified file would not be
referenced in the Photos library, so Photos would still show the
previous version of the photo (or the original).

The same would apply the other way around if changes were made in
Photos.

MacWorld has had several articles about Photos which might answer your
questions. If not, and they aren't covered by other preview articles or
Apple's preview page, then nobody here should be answering those
questions because OS X 10.10.3 (and therefore Photos for OS X) are under
NDA. (This applies to both the developer and public beta versions.)

If you want to find out more about it, you could join the public beta
programme yourself, and preferably work on a clone of your system and
iPhoto library.

Upgrading to Yosemite does nothing to an existing installation of iPhoto
or its library. You would need to install a newer version of the iPhoto
app before the library format would change.

In recent OS X versions, Apple had been updating iPhoto 9.x for
compatibility issues with each new OS (and to access new features). In
some cases, iPhoto 9.x updates required a change in the library format.
I recall a major change somewhere around the Lion or Mountain Lion time
frame which allowed iPhoto and Aperture to share a library.

iPhoto 9.5 was the update for Mavericks, and iPhoto 9.6 was the update
for Yosemite (it is free from the Mac App Store).

I don't know for certain, but I would not be at all surprised if Photos
for OS X will only support importing an iPhoto library from iPhoto 9.6.
Apple has often followed this pattern when rewriting apps from scratch
(e.g. the rewritten iWork apps can only import from iWork '09, not from
earlier versions).

Anyone still running an older iPhoto version will probably need to get
iPhoto 9.6 first and use that to upgrade their existing iPhoto library
before Photos can import it.

Those who are still running iPhoto 7.x or earlier need to go through an
extra step, running Apple's "iPhoto Library Upgrader" tool before that
library can be imported by iPhoto 9.5 (for Mavericks) or later.

Does Photos require an "export" or "import" of photos? If so, I'll pass.

What I like about Bridge is that it simply manages photos in place
within the file system.

If I do get it, I'll probably pop it into a VM.

Is there any info on whether iPhoto '09 would still work in 10.10.3 ? It
still works in 10.10.1.

My real iPhoto library is on myt Snow Leopard machine, with the yosemite
laptop only having a subset of albums. Once the latop gets incomaptible
software, it becomes useless as a backup since photos can't be sent back
easily as the library formats differ.

If I already had 10.10 running in a VM, I might do that; but I don't
feel like investing the time and energy into getting 10.10 running in
VirtualBox at the moment.
