If you're feeling adventurous and have a system you don't mind erasing
if things go South, you can download the Mac OS X 10.10.3 beta (which
includes the new iPhoto replacement app, Photos) from the App Store to
try it out for yourself.

"Apple advises that users install the beta software on a system or
partition that they are prepared to erase if necessary. Users are also
told to always back up their Mac when using beta software."

Personally, I'll probably just wait for the official release.

I guess one could always stuff it in a VM to play with it a bit..

You x-post and then set followup to one group.

Is that frowned upon or something?

Maybe. Usenet etiquette (and my news client) encourages using the
Followup-to header when posting to multiple groups to limit followup
postings to the single most relevant group.

<http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/docs/Usenet.html>
<http://www-archive.mozilla.org/community/etiquette.html>
...etc...

From RFC 1036:

"2.2.3. Followup-To

This line has the same format as "Newsgroups". If present, follow-
up messages are to be posted to the newsgroup or newsgroups listed
here. If this line is not present, follow-ups are posted to the
newsgroup or newsgroups listed in the "Newsgroups" line."

In this case, my news client suggested the header and I figured since
the announcement was mainly about the Mac OS X operating system, I'd
oblige and set the Followup-to header to comp.sys.mac.system, which
amounted to me pressing the Return key on my keyboard. It's simple
enough for anyone reading to see that's where follow-up posts will go. I
suppose it could be argued that since both groups are technically
relevant, one could omit the header. I don't see that it makes all that
much difference either way, though. And I tend to err on the side of
caution if possible - when it occurs to me, anyway. : )

I really don't think that this is common practice. And that that's
a good thing. If an article is posted to group A and B with
follow up set to A only and is commented by poster in B who don't
subscribe to A then s/he would not se that reply or any to his or
 her own... Weirdnes!

It's still good etiquette. And users are in full control over where they
post. It's just not as big a deal as some would make it out to be.

It might be ?good netiquette? or not. The document that you refer
to is not trying to impose it on the user. The default is that
follow ups are posted to all groups. And that is a good and by
 the user expected behavior.

When I set a Followup-To, I'll point it out in the message body.

That's the default behavior of slrn when replying to posts (though
sometime I delete it from my replies anyway). I don't recall if it's the
case or original posts though.

The situation doesn't seem to arise often in the c.s.m.* groups, but
it does occur regularly in the highly overlapping groups
alt.usage.english and alt.english.usage (the latter is believed to
have been created after some confused soul misremembered the name of
the former). Some people post to one of the groups, some to the
other, and some to both. The latter often crosspost. Then someone,
usually in the busier group, a.u.e, will either drop the
crossposting or set a follow-up, and the result is equivalent to
double-posting, which I assume we can all agree is a no-no.

In my case, I needed to specify a single newsgroup, where discussions
for Usenet Death Penalties were to take place. That this newsgroup,
news.admin.net-abuse.policy, was under the watchful 'eye' of a
mod-bot, and, by charter, allowed no cross-posts, I posted a
notification of the discussion in multiple pertinent newsgroups.
These included unmoderated groups in n.a.n-a.*, selected regional and
ISP specific groups, with followups set to n.a.n-a.policy. I'd
include brief notes, requesting that the Followup-To be honored and
noting that trying to cross-post into n.a.n-a.policy would result in
the article being dropped.

When I then posted the identical RFD message to the moderated
n.a.n-a.policy, I'd include a References header, which consisted of
the M-ID of the more widely distributed Request For Discussion. By
doing so, all following discussion threaded by References.

That the discussion remained in a single, moderated newsgroup allowed
discussion to go forward, without x-post trolls disrupting it. This
methodology worked admirably for several years. While I acted in the
capacity of a UDP cooridinator, not a single 'udpcancel' was issued.

Those were the good old/bad old days.

> Does anyone take Usenet that seriously anymore?

I don't, although I still enjoy seeing anvils dropped from low earth
orbit, from time to time.

These days, groups.google.com is probably the largest spam spigot in
the text hierarchies. Google's "spam is whatever our users say it is"
may work -- FSVO work -- for their email recipients. They remain clue
impervious on the Usenet side of things. They've had individual
spammers spewing for more than a decade.

> Whatever happened to that Chris Lewis dork?

Chris is alive, well and doing his best to keep spam out of your
inbox and your network secure.

I still visit the news.admin.net-abuse.* humor page, once in a while,
mostly to revisit Andrew Nellis' wonderfully imaginative stories.

    <http://www.panix.com/~tori/abuse-humor.html>

They don't make ko0ks like they used to, but Archie Pu pops up in
n.a.n-a.misc, once in a while, claiming forgery^W frogery, which lead
to more forehead2keyboard moments, than outright laughter.

I have Google for my mail and a very secure network. I remember, Lewis
said that he (and the other operators) had the right to censor the
newsfeed because it was hosted on his machine which was his property
that belonged to him. Which would have been fine, except that if someone
else who also owned a machine and also hosted news didn't honour his
cancels he'd throw a little bitch fit. I remember calling him a
"sanctimonious c...sucker" once, and I wasn't even breaking any of his
rules.

Then along came [spit] Burnore. Oh oh, he probably greps the spool
looking for his name kibo kibo kibo ...

As an FYI:

moving from 10.10.1 to 10.10.3 left iPhoto'09 (8.1.2) on the disk.
However, the OS refuses to launch it telling me to fetch a later version
of iPhoto on the App Store.

If I am to have incoompatible software between my main desktop (Snow
Leopard) and laptop, I might as well go with that new Photos thing. I'll
have to experiment to see what it can do and I guess USB keys are now
required to exchange photos between both woth manual import/export.

10.10.3 won't let me launch iPhoto 09, but the new "Photos" app was able
to extract from the iPhoto 09 library.

However, it created albums that had been deleted with no pictures in
them in iPhoto. I will end up zapping everything. The laptop only
carries a subset of images that I might need during a trip for instance.
So much of the photos there may not be needed for next trip.

the new iTunes was able to connect to Snow Leopard iTunes to bring in
missing music thta was added since last sync.

Because iPhoto 8.1 is years out of date, having been release about 5
years ago.
