I couldn't wake a clamshelled MB runing on battery only without
lifting the lid. Didn't realise this for a day or two!

Yup. Just found out yesterday from the knowledge-base.
To work with closed lid the power-supply must be connected.

It works fine otherwise with the lid closed, it just won't wake up
without using the lid switch on battery only.

Me, I got it *after* I noticed the machine had powered down because
the mains power was not attached. I mostly use the MB as a desktop
attached to stuff like keyboards and monitors and now and then let the
battery stretch its legs. Normally wake it with a key press on an
external usb board.

That's interesting. When we used a MBP as a "desktop computer," it
refused to run the external monitor without the mains adapter plugged in.

What was your setup? Mine, Snow, about 2010, a real MB, lovely white
plastic with white keyboard (not the depressing black ones), worked
fine with a big monitor connected via DVI, using an Apple converter
plugged in the small squarish monitor hole on side. The independently
mains powered monitor was plugged in and on before I fired up the MB.
And, relevant of course, the MB has been set up for years to use the
big monitor as the main screen with menus there etc. Many relevant
factors I guess. Your setup would have been different?

Ours is an older MBP (4,1) -- it was connected DVI-to-DVI to an external
Benq 22" monitor (I highly recommend these btw, they just sit and work
forever it seems). It didn't seem to matter in what order the setup was
powered on (but obviously the external monitor would have to be "on" if
I wanted to see anything on it and before the MBP could go into
clamshell mode).

We used an external keyboard too (the old one that shipped with that ol'
puck mouse and Sawtooth -- I'm typing on it now in my Mac Pro; it's a
bit sticky but I like the small footprint; wish it had a del key but).

I disremember the exact details, but I'd turn it all on and close the
laptop and it would go into clamshell mode, but wouldn't drive the Benq
unless it was plugged into the mains. Or something. I could try and
recreate it if it's important.

I guess it's not that important. Just one thing, when we close the
lid, our MBs go to sleep, the question of clamshellness is
questionable at this point. In my setup, if the power is connected,
yes, it is in clamshell mode (as shown by its waking without the lid
needing lifting); but in your setup, it appears not to be so, it was
merely playing possum and needed the lid switch to wake.

My MB is still on Snow Leopard, maybe this is a factor? My settings
for energy are don't wake for network, sleep the monitor after a few
mins and the computer after a few more.

Planning a couple month trip to USA in a couple of months, might get a
MB over there, heard they are much cheaper, then I can be all modern
and still keep the old MB on SL.

(btw, we are thinking SF first, maybe a week, and a drive in hire car
around California, through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico ending in
Denver, flying to New Orleans, maybe a few days there, then NY NY! for
a week.

Have no real idea of what is best but I want to see the country where
William Munny shot Billy "The House" in the whorehouse saloon, as well
as blasting other baddies who had to do with the capturing, whipping
and death of his friend Ed Logan.

Want to see where Frank Bullitt turned the tables in his Mustang (I
think) on some gangsters who were tailing him with a shotgun on board
theirs. I maybe will hire a car and try to take the corner fast and
frighteningly like he did down a steep SF street.

Want to check out if any houses in Albuquerque are covered in yellow
or orange plastic where drug labs might be hidden, want to check out
any graves for Walter White and Hank. I liked Hank.

Lot to do. I might have time to hit a few trails on horseback in
search of the remnants of the Balserstone Gang, might even be able to
round up that Jolly Old, will certainly be on the lookout for blokes
in pirate hats and eyepatches walking around with iPds, MBs, iPhones
etc. Am practicing my lassoing skills. I will consider a rendition of
him to Canada, you can deal with him then.)

I'm sure I got it originally from Huckleberry Finn. Really.
