Oh, so that's all right then. Your view of Usenet must be the one true and

Obviously, you were specifically shopping for a text-only newsfeed.
Had you been shopping for a full-feed NNTP service, they're quite easy
to find.
> verizon dropped binaries, but the 'rest of usenet' did not.
On the full feed server I access, there are at least 8514 binary
groups. There are also many text groups, which regularly see
binaries. They'll not be seen on a text-only feed, as these drop
anything with a binary attachment, regardless of where they're posted.
On 13 May 1998, a dyslexic news administrator in Japan, presumedly
created thirty six newsgroups accidentally, in a brand new
sub-hierarchy of alt.*.
alt.bainaries.pictures.*
It was my assumption, at the time, he was simply trying to add a
handful of alt.binaries.pictures.* newsgroups to his active list, but
was stymied by the misspelling. Still, those groups are full of
binaries.
> binaries are by far, the bulk of usenet traffic.
For most of the history of the Internet, Usenet accounted for the vast
bulk of traffic over TCP/IP. I don't know whether that's still the
case, but it was still that way, throughout most of the first decade
of this millennium.

And do you really need to retain / go back 1000+ messages in a thread??

The number of replies in sequence since the original post in the thread. A post 20 levels deep in the tree might quote only two or three prior posts. > And do you really need to retain / go back 1000+ messages in a thread?? No, but if I notice a few posts back-and-forthing between a few people who I know to be interesting posters, I can pop into the middle of the tree and backtrack as needed to see what the interesting topic is. Alt.usage.english gets about 300 new posts every day. I don't try to read even a quarter of those. I need an efficient way to find the posts that interest me. We had a house guest over a recent three-day weekend. I had to skip reading news until she was gone. There was no problem catching up to the comp.sys.mac.* groups, but alt.usage.english had over a thousand new postings. Hopeless. But I could quickly page down the tree and find replies to my posts, which are flagged, and at least answer them. -- John Varela

I'm using an old version of Thoth (1.5.4), but I don't know if there's a newer version of if it still works under newer versions of Mac OS X. Today I had to backtrack to find an earlier message from earlier in the week that I wanted to reply to and got the newgroup to retrieve the last 2000 messages without a problem. I've done that for 5000 messages before as well. I use the filters to not only killfile the morons, but also mark messages in different colours for various reasons, plus there's a "Mark Kept" option which I've never used that looks similar to flagging messages in an email application. Thoth displays message threads with more than 20 levels of replies without a problem as well.

Thoth displays newsgroup articles similar to Finder List View (and you can open individual topics up into their own windows) ... there's a little triangle icon next to any topics with multiple replies that you can click on to toggle a hierarcical structure. Not really what I'd call a "tree", as in Family Tree diagrams or flow charts, but I've never seen any newsreader or forum software that does that (not that that means there aren't any) and it would be rather messy to try and use on smaller displays.

This is a picture of the Parallels Desktop VM running OS/2, open to a different point in this thread. The pane at upper right is what I mean when I refer to the message tree. The Thoth display sounds like it might be similar. Is it? If it is, I'll take a look at Thoth. http://preview.tinyurl.com/ocrtvha -- John Varela

That looks very like what I want. I'll download it right away and take a look at it. The web site says it's updated to 10.9. -- John Varela

Wikipedia says that the program hasn't been for sale since 2013. -- John Varela

Maybe MacUpdate or the Wayback Machine website archive (http://web.archive.org). Mine is an ancient version 1.5.4 is from 2002, so probably not worth uploading even if I could find the original archive / installer (it's not in my normal folder where I keep old downloads, so must have come off one of the many magazine CDs I've collected over the years). I'm not sure what the last version released was, but this link for a newer-than-mine version 1.8.4 from 2009 still seems to work (2.2MB): http://www.macorchard.com/thoth/thoth-184-x.dmg which may or may not work with OS X 10.9. The problem of course is that it needs a registration code. The newer version may still work with the old registration codes. Since the official website no longer exists, I can't see any problem using someone else's registration code - I'll have to find the one I used.
