#69647 — Target disk query

What disk is the 'target' if I have multiple disks (in a Mac Pro, say)?

That question makes no sense since "target" may have several definitions.

If you are trying to ask which disk is the *startup* disk, then you can
take a look at the System Preferences > Startup Disk preference panel to
view or set the startup disk. You can also set the startup disk during
boot by pressing and holding the Option/Alt key after you hear the
startup chime to access the startup volume selection list. Then use the
mouse or keyboard to choose the disk you want to use as a startup
volume.

Are you referring to target disk mode (holding down T at startup), via
Firewire or Thunderbolt?

If so, the answer for a Mac Pro is "all of them". The Mac acts as a disk
controller, providing access to all of its internal drives.

It might also provide access to some externally connected disks, but I
haven't experimented with that, and if it does, it would depend on the
interface (e.g. no need to provide access to Firewire drives if the host
is connecting via Firewire, since the host can access them directly).

Early PowerPC Macs with Firewire ports only provided access to the
"primary" internal SATA drive via Target mode. If I remember right,
multi-drive access was a feature of the firmware in later PowerPC
models, probably from around the introduction of the PowerMac G5.

Thanks! That's exactly the answer I wanted. Now, I know I could have
just tried it, but I'm nervous about that kind of thing.

Next time you should explain more of what you really want in your
initial question rather than leaving us guessing.

Sorry, JR, but you're the only person who seems to have had any
difficulty with the concept. It was pretty obvious with about 5 seconds'
thought. I didn't know and wasn't motivated enough to try to find the
answer, but Dave did a pretty good job of it with the same information
you had. But then, neither Dave nor myself were (apparently) looking at
the message with a "let's see what we can use to club this guy over the
head with" attitude - Something I've noticed you seeming to be doing
more and more frequently over the last few months.

Used to be I had a fair amount of respect for you, but lately, that's
fading. Dunno what's got into you, but it almost looks like you're doing
your best to pick a fight with somebody. If that's the case... <shrug>
Different strokes, I guess.

If so, it's not intentional.

Fair enough. I do tend to move quickly; I admit I didn't take as much
time as I could have to think about it before answering. And I suppose I
may be letting the bickering of trolls and so on get to me, which may
boil over into interactions with others here. So I'll try to be more
aware and to do better.

You and the OP have my apologies. And thanks for the criticism, Don.

Fair enough. I've been around Usenet for a long time, and I have a
fairly thick skin. I've been around this group for a while too, and you
can be prickly but usually your contributions are useful.

Who are you two, and what did you do with my Usenet? This was supposed
to devolve into an annoying flame war, so I could put it into my
killfile. There's no apologies in Usenet!

Just to add a cherry on top (just for you, Barry ; D), I gotta give
props to Wilbur for figuring out a way to use "rucafrukus" in his email
address. Love it! : D

We can now conclude the love fest and get back to normal Usenet
programming. : )

Mixmin won't accept messages that don't end in a valid TLD. I just
picked a bunch of real ones in a row that won't get me in trouble for
forging someone's domain. I never thought of it as an acronym. All sorts
of possibilities there, though.

Still not a big fan of the Frenchies. They're not a race, still, just a
bunch of white eurotrash who speak a half-dead language. I'd forgotten
about that stuff. My dad was still a linebacker. I missed the reference
to rucafrukuser back then.

Will it accept ".invalid"? Which is, unless it's been changed since the
last time I bothered to look at the RFCs, a valid TLD specifically
intended to be used in "We want an address that can be resolved, but we
want anything addressed there to get dumped straight into the
bit-bucket" situations.

Seems like it should, right? It's actually interesting that it accepts
nowhere.at.all.ru.ca.fr.uk.us, since technically that's not a valid
domain at all. : D

You're right that "invalid" is a correct TLD, set up for this kind of
use. The server would accept that, but it also accepts "us" as a valid
domain, no matter what comes before it. It won't accept "me@screw.off"
though, because there is no "off." I also wouldn't use
"you_can@screw.me" because, while that's the TLD for Montenegro, I would
bet that someone has registered that domain. Hmm. "eat@my.sh.it" All
sorts of possibilities.

Fine then, I'm drinking coffee and rolling cigarettes and looking
out at the hot baked street and a lady just walked by wiggling it
in tight white pants, and we are not dead yet.

Ah, so it only checks the TLD. That makes sense. : )

Okay, so one time? In band camp? Jolly Roger <jollyroger@pobox.com> was all, like:

There's nothing inherently invalid about it. Whoever controls uk.us
(Neustar, Inc) could certainly create 'nowhere.at.all.ru.ca.fr.uk.us'.
