#69539 — ? Replacing Flash with HTML5?

Subject? Replacing Flash with HTML5?
Message-ID<mb2s96$rkk$1@dont-email.me>
Forgive my ignorance, but the details of using and dumping Flash is just
something I'm not familiar with. I'm trying to help a small non-profit
dump Flash from their website. Is it as simple as just doing a 'Save As
HTML5' in your website construction app? What if the webpage has a
Flash-based video? Does it have to be somehow 'translated' to HTML5
independently?

Also, there have been assertions/discussions that HTML5 will do
_virtually_ everything Flash will do except some very high-end, rarified
operations. Could someone tell me exactly what these operations are so I
can say to an organization 'oh, you're not doing that so Flash isn't
needed'. Thanks very much for your help.

Flash can do other things than just show a movie. If you just want to show a
movie, you have to have the movie in an acceptable format (mostly MP4 and/or
OGG). From http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_video.asp

<video width="320" height="240" autoplay>
    <source src="movie.mp4" type="video/mp4">
    <source src="movie.ogg" type="video/ogg">
    Your browser does not support the video tag.
</video>

To control the movie you need some javascript. You can do a very rudimentary
interface (start, stop, restart), to fancier like time bar, click to position,
speed control, volume control, etc.

Same site as above:

<div style="text-align:center">
  <button onclick="playPause()">Play/Pause</button>
  <button onclick="makeBig()">Big</button>
  <button onclick="makeSmall()">Small</button>
  <button onclick="makeNormal()">Normal</button>
  <br>
  <video id="video1" width="420">
    <source src="mov_bbb.mp4" type="video/mp4">
    <source src="mov_bbb.ogg" type="video/ogg">
    Your browser does not support HTML5 video.
  </video>
</div>

<script>
var myVideo = document.getElementById("video1");
function playPause() {
    if (myVideo.paused) myVideo.play(); else myVideo.pause();
}
function makeBig() { myVideo.width = 560; }
function makeSmall() { myVideo.width = 320; }
function makeNormal() { myVideo.width = 420; }
</script>

That depends on what software you're using to create Flash and website
content, and what the Flash content is being used for. Some Adobe
applications can Save As / Export Flash content as HTML5 and there are
some websites that claim to be able to convert between the two ... how
successful either of those does will depend on how complicated the
Flash content is.

Hmmm ... things that HTML5 can't do that Flash can do ... it can't
gobble up huge amounts of RAM, it can't leak RAM like a sieve, it can't
crash for no reason, it isn't as buggy or [reportedly] as complicated
to develop content in, it can't be as easily infected by malware, it's
not wholy owned by one greedy corporate, ... ;-)

But isn't HTML5 commitee made up of corporations?

But I don't like Adobe or Flash and at least HTML5 is in a better
direction

The people behind HTML5 are probably from many organisations and
businesses ... but I said HTML5 is not owned by *one* greedy coporate.

But it's a critical difference. One corporation is a monopoly, they
don't have to make compromises. A committee forces a give-and-take so
that they'll come to agreement.

W3C probably also has some members from academia, too.

And HTML (5 or not) is not owned by any of them.

The problem is that even when you have a committee creating the
standards and rules ... some moronic big company often thinks they know
better and goes around making up their own "standards" and "rules",
creating a massive mess and confusion, and trying to force everyone
else to do it the same way. In the past that moronic company has been
Microsloth with their stupid non-standard Internet Explorer web
browser. I can see Adobe *potentially* doing the exact same thing here
with HTML5.

That will ruin Adobe's Creekside browser.

Adobe doesn't have the clout that Netscape and Microshit had to ignore (sorry,
EXTEND) the standards. Also, people are far less tolerant of anyone ignoring
the standards.
