Ever since I got a brand new MB Air running Yosemite I've had this
oddity with Preview just stopping from opening pics (Application has
Quit). I have to Force Quit Preview and then it's ok again. Very
random.

What is the *verbatim* error message that is displayed?

If the application is quitting unexpectedly, it's crashing. If so, the
crash log will provide more information about the issue causing the
crash. Take a look in these two folders to see if there is a crash log
corresponding to the last time Preview crashed:

/Library/Logs/CrashReporter
/Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter

Post the contents of the log here for help understanding it.

This is all I see in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter:

Feb 1 17:05:07.082270 XXXXX-MacBook-Air.local discoveryd_helper[138]:
Basic RemoteControl com.apple.discoveryd_helper Starting XPC Server

The log is repeated over and over again and the only thing that changes
is the time.

Yes, but what is the *verbatim* error message that is displayed?

How about in /Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter?

There is no Library/Logs/CrashReport in /Users/me. I believe the
message says, "Preview has unexpectedly quit" but it's still open and
the only way I can get it to work is for Force Quit.

Thanks. It's crashing then.

There definitely is a /Users/you/Library (~/Library) folder. It's
normally hidden though. To get to it, hold down the Option key on the
keyboard while selecting the Go menu on the Finder menu bar, and choose
Library from the menu. Then locate the Logs folder and continue from
there.

Found it, but the only thing in Logs/CrashReporter/ is the MobileDevice
folder. There are other folders in the Logs folder like
DiagnosticReports, FaceTime, etc. Thanks for the help btw.

As David Empson says, I told you the wrong location. It should have
been:

~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

(Where ~ means /Users/you/)

Application crashes haven't been written to ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter
since Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). In Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and
later, they go in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

Details for an application crash are stored in a file named with the
pattern:

Application_YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS_Computer.crash

where the date and time indicate when the crash occurred.

The system deletes them automatically after a month.

My apologies - brain fart. Davis is, as usual, correct! Sorry for the
confusion. : /

Anyhow, find the latest crash log for Preview and post it in a reply
here. It may shed light on what is causing the crash.

Minor typo not worth correcting or commenting on. Or even telling you
not to correct. But I did.

Ok. There are only 3 reports in the DiagnosticsReports and none of them
are labeled with Preview. Now that I know where to look I'll pay closer
attention to the exact error message and then post the report. Stay
tuned. Thanks.

Hmm... Are you sure you looked in *both* places?:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (in /Users/you)

Under /Users/me/ there's only 8 folders, none of which is Library.

Under Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ there's a couple of
AmbientDisplay crash reports and one for Office.

Under option-click Go, Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports there's only 3
crash reports none of which say Preview.

This is a brand new MB Air btw of which I have not added any new apps
other than Office and Thoth so far to keep it as "clean" as possible. I
have updated iTunes and the 10.10.2 update so that's about it.

The ~/Library folder (under /Users/you) is hidden by default.

That's the ~/Library folder that is hidden by default.

It's strange that it's not in there.

What are the names of the three that are in there now?

Library has been made a hidden folder in recent versions of Mac OS X.

From your home folder, use Cmd-shift-G to get there by typing it out.
