And I've discovered that Mac OS doesn't play as nice with Linux servers
as I would hope. It won't authenticate with NIS unless you add the
shadow map which we can't as it breaks some appliances we have. And the
corporate IT environment doesn't support NIS shadow, so that leaves
their AD for authentication. Luckily I don't have access to that side
of the firewall to figure it out. And don't get me started on NFS
mounting requiring automounter to work, which we don't use. Ugh.

They are using NIS for authentication?

<checks>

Do they know it's no longer the 20th century? Have they heard of LDAP?

That's what's happening at the company that bought the startup where I
work. 50+ software engineers, all with Macs plus 4 IT people with PC
laptops from CostCo (we're trying to collect the old PCs from the
engineers but they're surprisingly resistant).

I'm convinced that the majority of the software people would have quite
the very day that corporate IT came by to replace their Macs with the
corporate Lenovo PC running Windows 7. And even though the IT Director
"does not support Macs", he's been told by a senior director to hire a
Mac person for his staff. Someone told me that Cisco didn't offically
support Macs when he worked there, but you could get one and use it.

We have 300,000 laptops/desktops on our network. Unless Apple can offer
us management tools to look after that, they aren't getting anywhere.

https://www.apple.com/ca/remotedesktop/

"First-class upgrades. Installing software or updates to your
network has never been this easy. Take an existing package, either
from Apple or a third party, and simply use the Install Package to
copy and install on your client computers. And it works with custom
install packages as well. Apple Remote Desktop will alert your
system’s users to upgrades and even restart machines remotely."

I don't know how scalable that is, however, the closing statement is:

"No Per-Client Tax Apple Remote Desktop 3 is incredibly
affordable. With the Unlimited Managed Systems edition, you can
manage any number of client computers — there is no per-client
     charge."

The real issue for your 300,000 client computers is the cost of changing
software on them. Even if spread out over 3 years, it would be very
costly. Adapting custom s/w would be costly as well not to mention
transition costs.

It isn't. Apple said not to use it for anything more than few dozen
machines & recommended we bought a third party product.

No shit. The cost of the XP to W7 "upgrade" we just finished was in the
tens of millions of dollars.

"Apple said" or "Apple reseller said"?? Some of the resellers are
rather hopeless, especially those that deal mainly in Windows PCs and
have Apple simply as a extra side-line.

You sound exactly like one of the aforementioned corporate IT Microsoft
drones. Careful out there. The shark is circling, and your days are
numbered if you can't (or won't) adapt to change. The day you are
instructed by upper management to work with Macs will be your final
warning. ; )

Apple does have Mac OS X Server, but I've never looked into what admin
tool come with that.

They've also recently started a new partnership with HP which will
reportedly mean more "enterprise" level business software and
solutions, but there's of course no word on what those actually are
yet.

Server is the admin tool:

You mean IBM - not HP:

I was going to bring that up, but as far as I can tell, Apple are not
very implicated in the apps side of this. That's the more valuable part
in the long term where "corporate" inroads are concerned. Of course it
will bolster iPad/iPhone sales which Apple are not allergic to.

Apple is providing a whole lot of technical and developer support to
IBM. It's a joint effort.

The bit you snipped about not being on the corporate inroads side of
this was the germane part.

I'm not sure how you think that changes anything. Apple and IBM are
attempting to make corporate inroads by collaborating to bring
enterprise-level apps to iOS devices.

I'll rephrase that: IBM wants to keep its corporate customers who are
seeing a move to Apple products, so IBM integrates support and apps for
idevices into its own ecosystem.

Apple, lacking the genes to go into corporate business gets its foot in
the door via IBM. But IBM is the bigger winner in this.

That's your opinion. I'm not so sure who the bigger winner will be just
yet. One could argue IBM needs it more than Apple does.

Fair enough.

At least in the short term. OTOH, Apple may just be content providing
the platform.
