Let's just agree to disagree.

I can't imagine that, for a standard person, the font matters
all that much for their email and usenet and web browsing.

For example, I have no idea what font I'm using right now, and,
I don't care.

If it's a "standard" Truetype font, all the better.

It might not matter to you. I matters to me.

You didn't specify any font whatsoever. What I see is what I have set my
newsreader to display messages with, and that is Monospace 13pt. What you
see depends on what you have set your own newsreader to use.

More importantly, Sage is ignoring the fact that to some people, the use
of fonts might just matter *outside* of reading Usenet. Usenet is not
the whole world, IMO.

It happens that I'm no connoisseur of fonts, but I don't see that as a
reason to try to deny other people their esthetic pleasures...

All I'm saying is that I can easily live within whatever fonts
are supplied by the operating system, and, furthermore, I would
NOT want any specific fonts because of the stated privacy reasons.

So, if someone wants to install custom fonts, and, hence, allow
their machine to be fingerprinted no matter where they used that
machine in the entire world, that's fine.

But, I, for one, prefer to be just like the rest.

Question is...... how do I get my fonts to look like everyone elses?

There is no "everyone elses". The fonts installed on any individual
computer depend on what applications you've installed (plus whatever
individual fonts you might install yourself) - Mac OS installs a set of
fonts, Microsoft Office installs it's own needed fonts, Adobe products
install their own fonts, etc. The particular fonts have also changed
over the years. Someone without Microsoft Office won't have the extra
fonts that Office installs, while someone who installed various Mac OS
updates and versions over the years will have different fonts to
someone who installed just the latest.

Besides which, unless you're creating and installing your own custom
fonts, there is no way that can "fingerprint" you individually, even if
anyone was stupid enough to bother trying to get such a list.

The tin-foil hat is around the corner. :-\

Almost every Windows and Mac laptop in the USA has Microsoft
Office on it, so, that's the set of fonts we would want to
replicate.

It must be easy. For you to say it's impossible can't be right.

All you want is the font set that most of the others have.

You're saying that font set is the default font set that comes

Either way, that's the set you want.
So, the question is how to get that set and ONLY that set?

many do, as microsoft office for mac is one of the top selling titles.

the point is that it's not almost every mac, especially since a mac out
of the box can read and write microsoft office documents without any
additional software.

in other words, there isn't a need for ms office on a mac unless
someone is actively creating and modifying office documents.
occasionally reading them (which is what most people need office for)
is already covered.

That's fine.

What matters is identifying the fonts that are on the system
(which is easy, since Panopticlick does that for you), and then
figuring out HOW to delete the non-standard ones.

That's not so easy.
Or is it?

How do we go about deleting non-standard fonts?

There aren't any "non-standard" fonts, except those you've installed
yourself individually.

If you start removing other fonts, then some applciations will start
failing to work properly.

How so? Macs can view Word documents without having Word installed. The
fact is a whole lot of Mac users have no need to spend good money on
Microsoft Office.

No, that's what *you* want, apparently. I and millions of Mac users have
no such desire.

Most Mac users have the fonts that come with Mac OS X, and perhaps a few
installed by third-party applications. Having used and service many,
many Macs during the past almost 30 years, I am fairly certain the
majority don't have Microsoft Office installed.

> Either way, that's the set you want.

You want it. I couldn't care less which fonts are installed on my
machines.

> So, the question is how to get that set and ONLY that set?

First you need to know what fonts most others have. As far as I can see,
you haven't done that.

Ten years ago, and more, I might have been convinced that MS Office was
on most Macs. Maybe. Now? There is no possible chance. Of the several
dozen Macs I work on on a regular basis, only two have MS Office and
only one has a legal copy of MS Office.

There are so many things in fingerprinting that concentrating on Fonts is
stupid. Fingerprinting *IS* a problem though, and will probably become
more and more of a problem. I would consider running an addon that let
me strip out most of the information viewable by a remote website as to
what sort of browser I had and what it is capable of.

It's elementary Watson, we must track down and question everyone using

It's actually far easier than that.
If your browser signature is unique, then you can be tracked anywhere.

Here's my summary of what I have discovered for reducing entropy in the
specific items that are reported by panopticlick.eff.org (with your help).
============================================================================
We can now reduce entropy for all the items reported by Panopticlick
1. User Agent
2. HTTP_ACCEPT Headers
3. Browser Plugin Details
4. Time Zone
5. Screen Size and Color Depth
6. System Fonts
7. Are Cookies Enabled?
8. Limited supercookie test
============================================================================
1. Panopticlick User Agent entropy:
SecretAgent extension https://www.dephormation.org.uk
UserAgentSwitcher extension http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher
============================================================================
2. Panopticlick HTTP_ACCEPT Headers entropy:
RandomAgentSpoofer extension https://github.com/dillbyrne/random-agent-spoofer
============================================================================
3. Panopticlick Browser Plugin Details entropy:
Extensions are OK but do NOT add Plug-ins (which will affect entropy)
============================================================================
4. Panopticlick TimeZone entropy:
This pops up Panopticlick.eff.org with a different time zone:
$ TZ=CET-1 firefox -url panopticlick.eff.org &
$ TZ=UTC+08:00 firefox -url panopticlick.eff.org &
$ TZ=UTC+5 firefox -url panopticlick.eff.org &
============================================================================
5. Panopticlick Screen Size & Color Depth entropy:
Too bad xrandr can only increase the size of the display (not decrease it):
$ xrandr --output DISPLAY --fb 1366x768
============================================================================
6. Panopticlick System Fonts entropy:
NoScript extension extension https://noscript.net

$ locate fonts.dir
(remove any oddball directory that is not generally found)
============================================================================
7. Panopticlick Are Cookies Enabled? entropy:
Self-Destructing Cookies https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/self-destructing-cookies
============================================================================
8. Panoptoclick Limited supercookie test entropy:
Foundstone HTML5 Local Storage Explorer http://www.foundstone.com
============================================================================
Encrypt web pages that are not encrypted:
HTTPS Everywhere https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
============================================================================
That last item is new to me, but, it seems useful if I can figure out how
to get it to encrypt non-encrypted sites, such as www.google.com.

Google is https by default. If you disbelieve, then you can just type
your own "https:" scheme into the destination bar, or set it up as a
bookmark.

Http Everywhere won't encrypt pages for you -- it seeks out the
encrypted versions of pages you visit. I have it installed here. You
might also want to look at Privacy Badger and MailVelope.
