This is absolutely true. There are often way more efficient ways to do
things than porting a display to a remote screen.

I have XQuartz installed but have no need for the remote display aspect
(so I've never bothered looking up how to do it).

The only reason I have XQuartz installed is to use one application for
which the Mac port still requires X11: Wireshark.

I don't have an attitude problem. If you have a problem with my attitude,
                    that's your problem.

Use your imagination. I don't care enough about whether you agree or not
to recall and convey specific instances to you; but I've certainly
encountered plenty of them. If that's not good enough for you, too bad.

shitty and mainstream commercial software (even low end stuff) is much
better with the user being way more productive. there's the occasional
exception but that's rare.

export DISPLAY=10.0.0.21:0.0

then, when you run an X application, the window opens on node 10.0.0.21
instead of current node. (the 0.0 indicates which display on that node
if that node runs multiple instances of X. If you quit X server on the

I often run Wireshark on the Xserve since one of its ethernet ports is
connected to the switch where I can assign it to any VLAN and then do
the port monitoring for that VLAN despite my workstation/laptop not
being on that VLAN.

No, that is an example of moving away from a shitty excuse of a unix
program to sort of kind of does a GUI very poorly.

Real people get their coffee from Dunkin Donuts.

Perhaps he said that because the majority of "hipsters" are the customers
who are sitting in Starbucks using their Mac products while nursing a $5
latte. Thinkpad users usually go to Dunkin Donuts on free refill days!

I'm still unclear on what makes a hipster a hipster. I'd love to know
more. Enlighten me!

I hate to break it to you, but Dunkin Donuts serves the same crap coffee
bean blends as everyone else. People who truly appreciate a good cup of
coffee or espresso brew it themselves at home with quality beans that
are not only cheaper, but also are fresh roasted and not prepackaged
sitting on a shelf for who knows how long. Tons of "real people"
wouldn't know a truly good cup of coffee from shit, and the lines in
front of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are proof of that..

Well, a weird hair style/color would start that off. Then, perhaps a
wool stocking cap in any weather, or a beret for the older hipster. Red
shoes, either leather or sneakers. Perhaps, to top it off, heroin chic/
emaciated look. Add in several college textbooks by Martin Buber,
psychology and perhaps a New Age climate change text.

Here in Austin, there are many "gourmet" coffee roasters who charge up to
$20 for a 12oz bag of beans. My wife and I tend to like the Dunkin
beans, we grind them ourselves. We are not "hipsters", just retired
farts who drink too much coffee at home, requiring more moderately priced
coffee. I have to say, Dunkin Donuts coffee is much better than Chock
full O' Nuts!

That sounds extremely odd to me. So it's all about appearance? I'm not
sure I've ever seen anyone matching that description. Are there really
people who dress up that way, or just some made-up fantasy?

We tend to be pretty picky, because we've been spoiled. So we don't mind
spending over $15 a bag for good beans. The things is we'll get *way*
more out of that bag than two $7 Star Bucks drinks. So it's well worth the
money.

I thought it was anyone who nurses a five-buck cup of coffee in
Starbucks while on his iPad or MacBook.

Honestly, I haven't seen a description that matches anyone I see in real
life. I'm still unclear as to what the term actually means. Perhaps it's
just a fantasy categorization purely intended to offend others.

angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the
starry dynamo in the machinery of night,

who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the
supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of
cities contemplating jazz ...

and so on. I've met several. None of them had Macs.

I have to admit that sounds closer to the truth and less far-fetched

You've got it! Those types sit there, usually hogging a table for four,
taking up all the power outlets nearby. They maybe are nibbling a non-
fat, low calorie blueberry muffin all the way down to the crumbs!
